Bathroom smell

We have a 2608 SB travel trailer. We are in Florida for a few months. We are have a problem with an awful odor in the bathroom. It smells like ammonia, it reminds me of going into an outhouse that has been in the sun in August. We have cleaned the entire bathroom several times, checked the roof vents, kept the shower and sink drains plugged, kept water in the toilet, had the fan off, on, opened and closed. We have treated the black tank with Happy Camper. Both grey tanks and the black tank are closed. We have dumped and backwashed the black tank.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I read something not too long ago about a certain brand of RV toilet. The inside was not entirely sealed which caused some urine not to go into the tank but collect inside the toilet. May have seen it here on this forum.

If you have a Dometic Model 300 toilet you probably have a defective unit. Look on the side where the pedal is and there will be a model number tag. Take a pic, if is a model 300 call Dometic and they will replace it.

Search model 300 on the forum and there a many discussions about this. The earlier poster is right about sewer water getting trapped in the bowl...

If you are camping and have to use rv until the toilet is replaced a trick I used to help eliminate the urine odor until I got it fixed was to pour some holding tank chemical into the base of the toilet. In the back of the toilet there is an opening where you can do this...

Smelly bathroom

We had the same problem in our campers bathroom. Had a bad air admittance valve. Replaced it and problem solved!

If you had the Dometic issue you would notice a completely different odor. AAV leak smells like sewer. Model 300 smells like urine as if you went in a men’s bathroom that has not been properly maintained or for some of us old timers a diaper pail..lol..

Hey Rpod
Try tightening the bolts holding the toilet to the floor and then run a bead of silicone all around the base. I have a 2507s mini lite and had the same problem last summer. It disappeared after I did the aforementioned

Again, 2 different odors. Leaking around the floor seal would smell like black tank (sewer). The Dometic 300 smell is the strong smell of urine/ammonia..

If it is the stale urine smell and you have the dometic 300 toilet, you need to change out the toilet. For a short term fix, you can remove the toilet carefully. Plug the hole in floor temporarily. Carefully take the toilet outside being careful not to tip it. Turn it over and drain it and clean out the cavity in the base. See Photo of cavity in back.

Is there a site that shows affected model/serial #s? I can't find it.

I'd like to see if mine is subject to recall and take care of it now instead of waiting.

There is not an official recall that I am aware of. You have to call Dometic with your serial #. If you are upgrading to the 310 be aware that it needs a little more clearance to the back wall.

Dometic website also says you have to take it to a service dealer:

This is something that will need to be looked at by a service center to have it taken care of.

But I saw many posts of people having it sent directly to them. I'll have to keep an eye on it with my borescope camera I guess.

The 310 should fit okay.....the 320 is enlongated and may not fit IF your present toilet sits close to the wall.

Thanks Ken I meant to say 320. As that is the upgrade they many times offer a deal on.

Thank you everyone for your reply’s. I called Dometic and gave them the serial number and it is covered. They are sending me out a replacement. Also I was able to upgrade to the 310 for $75.
This forum saved me a lot of frustration.

The 310 is a nice upgrade. No creaking, and you don't have to worry about scratching the bowl when cleaning because it's not plastic.

That sentence implies that there are some men's rooms that ARE properly maintained. Perhaps in private office buildings but I'm still searching for the public restroom that isn't suffering from the poor aim of it's users.

Have not needed to change out toilet yet, but if I do, 310 is same size as 300? I already know the 320 will not fit without making cabinet modifications.

We had an oder issue recently, and it turned out to be our vent tubes were loose. However after the dealer fixed it, we had the issue again. They said it could be our tanks could have been dirty even though we had flushed them. So we tried flushing with the black tank closed instead of open per the note under the flush valve. I was told to fill it up completely to make sure the top of the tank was also cleaned. It seemed to work, but we kind of stopped using the bathroom in the unit afterwards and just used the campsite restrooms. So not sure, but it does not smell at the moment. Had Dometic sens us a replacement as well, no fuss either. I opted for the 310 with the hand sprayer which was $100 versus the non-sprayer model that was $75. Took about a week and a couple of days to arrive. Have not installed it yet though, the wife wants a bidet, so I am ordering the stuff I need for that to install all at once. Hopefully our smell issue will go away after the toilet install, as well as some of the 360 degree vent caps.
