Do I have enough truck? Looking for reassurance/thoughts?
Looking at moving up to a 2018 Rockwood Mini lite 2109S with a UVW on the trailer of 4209lbs. Tongue WT 412lbs.
I have a 2018 Ram 3.0l turbo EcoDiesel 4x4 with 5'7" box, crew cab, with axle ratio of 3.55. Payload of 1330lbs and a maximum trailer weight of rating of 7560lbs.
I will not be carrying potable, grey or black water.
The trailer is for my wife and I and the beloved dog. At the dealer they said I had lots of truck but after reading numerous threads, i think I would like to hear from the true road warriors.
Thanks for any advise, good, bad or otherwise.

I suggest you go out and buy one of these:
https://www.commercialtrucktrader.co...tar-5007895667
at 140,000.00 it is a bargain and anything less is putting everyone in danger and the world may even explode.
All kidding aside, you really need to know the GVWR of the trailer, not the UVW as a starting point.
The only way to know exact weights is to load up the trailer with everything you take on a trip, food, water and all. Then go to a scale and get actual weights. In reality that may not be possible or easily done.
I would assume a GVWR of under or close to 6k pounds. Tongue weight would be over 600 pounds fully loaded, closer to 900 possibly. In the extreme case you would only have a payload of 400 pounds left for the truck. That would include all passengers and cargo. Depending on the size of your family you might exceed the payload capacity of the Ram. I am a family of 5 and we add up to about 800 pounds for just us. Then we have 2 dogs and anything else we take in the truck.
The issue with the 1/2 ton pickups is not the trailer towing capacity, it is the cargo capacity.

Based on what you provided you’ll be fine. Go have fun!
Things to be aware of,
Unfortunately that 3.0 is reducing your payload
Put cargo in the trailer and balance to have proper tongue weight. 1/2 ton trucks are limited by payload and RAWR.
Have a properly adjusted quality WDH, this can only be truly accomplished if scales are used.
Most importantly, drive within your skill level.

Yes your fine. I own a Flagstaff Microlite 25BRDS (Rockwood minilite 2509s) and own a 2015 Ram Eco diesel. Pulls great and will handle the load. Just get a good hitch and use tow/haul mode and drive!

dtracy,
It is refreshing to hear someone suggest a reasonable sized trailer for a change.
I think you will be fine, not fast maybe but fine.

You are more than fine. I tow the same weight with a 13 year old truck and it does great.
Even loaded you are looking at 5000 lbs, maybe 5400 with some water in it. Well below your max tow. Also, I think some of these guys are double counting their numbers when it comes to payload and trailer weight. It is one or the other, not both.
Easiest way to double check is look at your gross combined weight rating. Your truck will list this in the door. Mine says 13000 lbs combined for truck and trailer. Truck weighs 5300 lbs, trailer weighs 4200 empty. That literally means I have 3500 pounds I can add before I am over weight. Now the truck and trailer have some limits on their own and that weight gets split up but you get the idea.

I agree with the previous assessments. Even with a loaded hitch weight of 600 / 650 lbs, you'd still be within the Ram's payload capacity (presuming a typical cargo load of a passenger, the pup, some camping gear, etc).
I'd pull the trigger and enjoy that new Rockwood Mini-Lite. With the trailer loaded for camping, roll on to a CAT scale to confirm your weights. I think you'll be fine.

You could probably carry a full load of fresh water in addition to any additional gear without having any issue with towing. Just remember to balance the load.

Funny how there are so many varying opinions and reasons that you DO or DONT have enough truck.
And it seems that a lot of folks are sort of hoping to get more DOs to help them feel OK about their existing 1/2 ton.I don’t blame them, new trucks are expensive, but so is an accident on the highway.
Very few folks think about the braking portion of this age old question.
3/4 ton brakes are a lot bigger.

Towing capacity no problem.
The issue is usually cargo. After loading up the trailer you could easily add 1000 lb. So call your new hitch weight 530lb. You have 800lb cargo, passengers and stuff. Looks ok.
Also, half ton trucks usually have 500lb hitch rating before requiring WDH.

Remember the dealers primary job is to sell you a TT. He doesn't have to tow it. You should be OK if you don't get carried away loading TT and truck bed. First few trips get a feel for how it stops.
Have fun.

We have a 2016 1/2 ton Eco Diesel, with a 3.92 rear end and every tow feature Ram provides. We put a 2015 Wildwood 28rkss and have no problem pulling or stopping, in a straight line. Wife, me, and Dog and Cat. Only problem, AND IT IS NOT A MAJOR ONE, is the 26 gallon fuel tank. At max. of 14 MPG it doesn't give you much range. Have fun.

Just do the math.
Figure 5,300 lbs rolling down the highway. That will put about 690 lbs on your hitch. So, trailer and wdh will be in the 750 ballpark.
That leaves around 600 lbs for you, wife, dog, firewood, any accessories, and anything else in the bed. Should be fine, unless you're large people.

I have 2014 eco pulled a 2014 24RBS Jayco, listed empty weight of 4,070 and fully loaded with water 6,060 and tongue weight 660, no issues and scales out just fine.
Limitation not your motor, it's a pulling beast, its truck capacity that will hold you back.

I have a 1/2 Ford with the 3.5 eco boost, (2017)
I pull a 26 foot mini lite, it does OK with it, I don't think I'd want to pull anything bigger with mine, but it does ok.
You should be fine.

You Will Love It!!!
We have the 2109s (2019 model) and we love it.
We tow it with a 2wd 2016 Ford F150 with the 2.7 Ecoboost, 6sp auto and a 3:31 rear end.
Does a great job, on the hills and mountains and flat out great on the flat interstates.
I believe your truck will be fine.
I have not scaled out our rig fully loaded with everything we take yet, but other than not having the large fuel tank on the truck, no complaints.
Speed kills the mpg's on ours so I always run about 5mph under the posted usually stick around 63 mph for the best mpg's...
I lock out the top gears in hilly areas so the trans isn't all over the place shifting, locking out 5 and 6, sometimes 4 5 and 6 depending on the terrain.
Good luck with yours if you go with the 2109s! That small slide out makes a world of difference.

We have pulled our 2109s with our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee ecodiesel for over 50,000 miles, sometimes with full water and a Honda 2000i generator mounted on a metal carrier I bolted to the frame in back. Pulls great over all terrain and up and down steep grades.
