Dometic Fridge not switching to battery
Hi,
I have a 2006 Rockwood 256HW. I would like to leave our fridge running while driving. We are leaving tomorrow and it is nice and cold and has been running off a 30 amp circuit from my house. However, when I unplug it from the house and switch to my truck battery I hear the gas igniter going off even though the gas is shutoff. Why doesn't it immediately switch to the battery?
I can also feel the back is not as hot as usual. Do I likely have a short somewhere? Or will it eventually switch to the battery?

I am pretty sure gas is your only option when unplugged. If is set on auto it will attempt to ignite when it senses power loss.

It doesn't run on 12 volts. EITHER 120v OR gas. v At least that is how my Dometic fridge operates, as well as many others that I'm aware of do. Unless you have a different model than the vast majority of us has, that is how they operate. You can drive with the fridge gas on without any worries, just keep the area where the fridge vent is located on the outside away from any gas pumps! I run with the gas fridge on sometimes, depending on the length of my trip. Randy

I have seen 3 way refrigerators (12v being the 3rd) but not too often. My Norcold is only 120v or gas and it doesn't present a problem traveling on gas. I do stop short of a gas pump, shut it off, fill up, pull away and turn it back on. Open flame and gas vapor, not good.

There are two differant type of Dometic RV refrigerators, if you have a 3 way, 110vac
propane and 12vdc model you have to manually switch over. Most are just 120vac and propane, but require 12vdc for the control circuit. Would help if you could say the model number.

thanks for all the replies. The manual I have says LEGEN 3-Way AMES Model.
It has 3 modes DC, AC, and GAS. It is currently set to AUTO.
Sounds like if worse comes to worse I can use the propane while traveling. It has a 12 VDC Terminal block and what appears to be a 12 DC power chord plugged in.

Here is one quote from the manual. " ... the control system can manually be set to DC operation ( DC mode). The refrigerator controls will work down to 9.6 volt DC". Seems like while I'm cruising on the road it should use the battery, but I'm just not sure.

mdfas, you posted this in the Travel Trailer/5th Wheel section and you have a popup. TT's and 5th wheels don't have 3-way fridges like popups do.
that's why some of the answers are about the typical 2-way fridges that most RV's have.

You need to manually switch it to 12volt. There is a switch somewhere on the unit.

On the front control panel, press button #2 DC and DC light next to it (left) should light up. Then it is on DC mode.
