First drive to Florida with new fiver.
Looking for anyone who has travelled to okeechobee Florida. Being our first trip with a fiver, want to stay on interstate highways. Good access to rest stops and truck stops for diesel fuel.
Leaving from Cobourg to Lansdowne then accoss Gananoque bridge to USA. Take interstate 81 to Harrisburg, then #83 to Baltimore, then #95 the rest of the way to Florida.
Cheers Rick

Rick....
We live near Belleville and we’re heading to Florida on the 15th of this month.
We’ve done the route to Florida through Ganonoque more times than we can count and have a number of route options.
PM me for one on one follow up and we can talk live by phone.

Are you in a hurry or would you rather have less traffic? If you haven't ever driven I-95, it can be a bear, especially around holidays. Going through Baltimore/DC anywhere near rush hour (6:30-9:30am and 3-6:30pm) and especially Fridays or Sundays can be cause a significant emotional event. Traffic will be crazy from outside Baltimore, all the way through to south of DC.
A much less traveled and (to me) slower-paced route would be I-81 to I-40 and then south on I-75. You'll get slowed down in Atlanta, but it is still less crazy than the entire Eastern Corridor.
Travel time is about 2-3 hours more, but really, it is a lot less stress.

Once in NC I-95 is fine. It does get crazy from VA north.

Suggest you avoid I95 until south of Washington. Our snow bird route is I81 to I66 to Us 17 to I95. We stop overnight near Fredricksburg, VA, then South of the Border on the North and South Carolina line then Kingsland,GA enroute to our campsite in Mayo, FL

our best route
We stayed in Cobourg the month of July. Great city. We have made similar trip many times. Our favorite is 81 to 77 to 74 to 95. All interstates can be a problem but we have had the least amount on these.

I live in Okeechobee, Florida and we pull our 5th wheel up 95 at least 2 times each year. I would suggest the I-81 to I-66 to Rt. 17 below D.C. for that is what I use. I only know of a KOA in Fredericksburg which is expensive and off the beaten path ( I was born and raised in Fredericksburg) and the campground at South of the Border on the N.C./S.C border is easy to get into, very reasonable, lots of pull thru sites. Not fancy but ok for overnight. We have free bluegrass music jam sessions here in Okeechobee if you are interested to listen, give me a buzz and I will fill you in. 772-388-1353 Have a safe trip down!!!

I take I81 to Winchester, VA then 17 which runs into I66 and then 17 branches off again to I 95 at Fredrecksburg, VA. An alternate is to go a little south of Winchester and pick up 66 there but although 17 out of
Winchester is a little slower it is good road and a little shorter. I like getting off the interstate for a little while if it is on good roads. Get fuel at Winchester truck stop and you are good to go until next stop on 95

Agree, this is a comfortable route. There is a Walmart on the right approaching I95 while on US17. No propane in the Baltimore tunnels. Can avoid via the Francis Scott Key Bridge to the east around Baltimore, but you will still have Washington to deal with.

I'm a Commodity relocation specialist (truck driver) this is the way I go to avoid DC at all costs. There is a old rundown truck stop in Opel VA on the 17 that has a KILLER barbecue restaurant in it, a must stop and I don't like barbecue.

I make the trip from upstate NY to SW Florida twice a year and I agree to avoid Washington and Baltimore at all costs. I also avoid Richmond VA. My preferred route is I-81 to I-77 (VA exit #81) to Charlotte through to Columbia SC. In Columbia, I-77 merges with I-26 East toward Charleston SC. Finally get on I-95 in SC. You may encounter some traffic in Charlotte, but nothing like DC/Baltimore etc. Once you get to Florida consider staying on I-95 to near Port St. Lucie then head west to Lake O.
I suggest getting a RV friendly GPS (I have a Rand McNally 7720). This type of GPS will find RV parks, big Travel Centers, Walmarts and rest areas along your route. They can also route you around low clearance bridges or tunnels where propane is prohibited.

From Boston we go out to 81, 77 26 and finally back to 95 in South Carolina. We always stay at the natural bridge KOA in Virginia which is close to about half way for us and it's right off 81 with gas and Diesel. It is certainly a longer distance but if you hit a traffic jam on 95 you can quickly make up for the extra distance time wise. Towing on 95 through some of the north east's over populated cities is not what I would call enjoyable.....
Safe travels and enjoy!

I'm south of Okeechobee and just got back from a bugout for Irma. If you'd like a list of all the truck stops along 75 from just south of Atlanta on down let me know. I've got a spreadsheet. I generally map it to plan to stop every 150 miles as my 26 gal tank is really only good for about 200 or so.
Highly recommend taking 75 over 95.

Hey, I want to thank everyone for their advice and experience in travelling to Florida. From all the information, we have planned a 4 days trip down stopping at 3 RV parks before reaching our final destination. Basically I 81 to 77 to 26 to 95. Well below the busy cities.
Thanks again to everyone.

You didn't mention when you are leaving for Florida. My first trip south with a new 5th wheel was just after Christmas in 2012. Trying to outrun winter storm Euclid, but failed. I mention all of this to explain why you should cancel your reservation at the preplanned stops. (I had 3 reservations for my trip). On the first day we drove in snow and wet slush sometimes in 4 wheel drive at 25 miles per hour to finally get to the first campground about 3 hours later than planned. On the 2nd day the storm cleared and we made much better mileage than I had calculated so we stopped about 3 hours early. For subsequent trips south and back we never had reservations and just stopped when we were ready. My only caution is don't try this going north on April 1st when about 90% of the snow birds all leave Florida on the same day
