Question Fridge Winter Storage With Island (Door Can't Be Open)

What do you do to prevent mold in your fridge in your 8289WS?

Our unit has an island sink and the fridge door cannot be opened when the slide is in

Do you have "0" clearance, or 1 or 2 inches? You only need to have them cracked 1/2" or so to get adequate ventilation to prevent mold and petri dish action.

Slip a hand towel over the doors to create a gap.

There are two plastic pieces that should have come in your fridge or owners packet. They clip on to the freezer and main refer door latches and will keep the doors open a couple of inches for ventilation.

Rocco, I've found that those are unreliable and fall out.

I should have added that they also keep the door from opening any further as well.

I had the same unit for 7 years, all I did was put a small piece of foam on the edge of the door and then closed it up to the island, in 7 years I never had a problem. Do not use those little spacers they supplied, it will not work and you will break them off.

0 Clerance,if I do not find any other solution I may have to put the slide out 1/2" but I do not want to do this unless it is a last resort.

I've found they fall out when transporting, but as long as the rig doesn't move, they don't move. So, I'll drive it to the storage lot, drop it, put the slide out enough to get to the fridge, put the tabs in, and put the slide back in. Then, disconnect the battery.

Reverse the process when picking the trailer up. Connect battery, put slide out, remove tabs, latch fridge, put slide back in, hook up trailer and go.

Haven't seen that before. So, the fridge hits the island when it comes in? Doesn't that cause dings on the fridge?

I would say maybe 1/4" but plan to check tomorrow to be sure.

The clips I have attach on the door latches. They slip on easy but are a little more difficult to remove in the spring. I don't have pics of how they are installed.

Thanks for the heads up Johnfort! I have only used them when the trailer is parked. I had not thought about them failing while towing.

I gave up on them after several fails. Just closed the doors when moving the TT and then put blocker towels in when in place.

Here I'll say it again had the exact same unit for 7 years, never a problem with what I stated, it is a proven fact hope that helps from a person who owned a 8289WS.

I'd say, depending on the fridge, might not be too big of a deal to just take the doors OFF.

Just snagged this tonight while I was out packing up the trailer. If it’s a Dometic with the blue tabs, this will give an idea of how much room you’ll need for the tabs:

And for the earlier poster who asked how they insert:

We have a 8289 and the fridge door actually touches the island with the slide in, and yes it did leave a mark until we started draping a dish towel over the island. So we can't open the fridge at all. Bought one of those dehumidifier tubs at Wal-Mart to keep in the fridge when we're not using it.

I lived in coastal Texas for 21 years. High humidity.

I now have been in Colorado for 3 years. Low humidity.

I've had an RV of some type with a refrigerator all those 24 years.

I've never stored my unit with the frig open and have NEVER had mold.

Prior to storage, the friges have been wiped down (all surfaces) with normal dilution of Pine Sol used to clean the interior. Doors have been left open long enough for normal drying. About an hour or so.

Clean the frig, close the doors, and store the rig.

Can you take the doors of the hinges and store them on top of the bed?
