Front Steps Sliding Open During Travel

On a recent trip to the Keystone State I noticed my front tri-fold steps were sliding out when I made a hard left turn after a stop. The rear steps did not have this problem.

I looked at the rear steps for a comparison, they look the same.

Has anyone experienced this problem.

The only time mine came out were in a strong side wind. A neighbor with a Rockwood experienced the same thing. I've taken to putting a bungee cord through them. Nothing worse that looking in your mirror and see your steps sticking out just waiting to hit something!

X2 Strong wind. First time I used duct tape (all I had). Now use bungee.

I think its happened to many at one time or another.

I had a flagstaff that did it on occasion in strong side winds from the passenger side but my sabre has yet to do it.

Mine did it w/o wind, just on turns alone. I use 18" bungee to hold in place with extras in tool box.

Mine has done exactly the same thing for no apparent reason. I've now towed it a couple of times since it happened and no problem. It only seems to happen to the front steps on my TT.

My steps opened on their own for no apparent reason. Now I put 2 strong bungee cords around them when I'm traveling. Now if I could just remember to put the handrail in when I pull out.

Do you still have rivets for pivots on the steps?

Ditto on the bungee chord solution.
Love the turn left reference for Nascar! What a scream!
What can you say while watching cars go in a circle hundreds of times, but....Left! Left! Turn Left! Phew! Left...Turn Left! Phew!

What do you mean "rivets for pivots on the steps?". I'll probably just bunjie front & back steps on all future trips.

The individual steps pivot from the stow to open position. Those pivots are rivets. Drill them out and replace with either 1/4" or 5/16" ss bolts, washers & nylock nuts.

Strangely enough, if memory serves me correctly I think I saw a redneck style race a while back...a couple cars with TT's and one with a boat in tow. Not sure but I think I saw it on Speed.

Probably smart. On my old TT (well 3 years old) the rivets starting to fail. Of course one time while I was on the way out and the two lower steps completely gave way. Luckily I was near grass and kept my balance and just ran out onto it. Ended up replacing them with bolts/washer/nuts. Probably need to be proactive with the new trailer. Although I have gotten a step support and use it under the bottom step to keep as much of the downward pressure off the steps as possible.

Glad I found this thread, thought I was alone...I just started having the same problem. When it was new and tight it was fine, but now mine opens (not when I turn) when I hit a large bump or stretch of bumpy road. So I too now use a bungee cord. Sounds like I better get a color coordinated one as it appears this is going to be a permanent fixture ;-)
