Gas Bottle Removal

I just emptied my 2 LP gas bottles and tried to remove them to get them filled. I can't get them out. The enclosure is to small to maneuver them out the door. I gave up and hooked up and went to Camping World to have them do it. After struggling for over an hour, they gave up. They broke their own rules and filled the bottles where they were mounted. But for my peace of mind, how do I remove the bottles? I have a Rockwood Signature Ultra Lite 8244WS.

ive owned a few units that were certainly a tight fit that required a song and a dance and a specific tilt to get the bottle out but never have heard of one not coming out at all?

I have to wonder how they got them in there if they won't come out?

I have to lift mine straight up and pull bottom out first. Not fun with 30 pounders

Luckily we have 20 lb. cylinders, but it's still a bit of a pain. It's even more of a pain getting them back in.

To get mine out, I've learned, I have to unscrew the mount that holds them in place, then lean them to the door and pull through.. Seems to work for me..

They framed the trailer around them. What's the matter with you?!?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I'd like to see a picture too. My V-cross has a trolley that they are mounted on. I slide a release lever under the trolley and roll it out. I thought that they did it this way on 5ers too.

I thought of that also, but the retainer is attached behind the bottles, not enough room to get to. And, I also wonder how the factory got them in. This is not funny, people. It really is a serious issue. But of course, no one from Forest River is coming forward with advice. Might this give you a clue as to what brand your next RV might not be?

You don't use very much Propane since this is the 1st time for refueling since 2013! If this unit is used maybe someone installed 30# Tanks where the Factory had 20#? Youroo!!

I’m not any help. I had some friends that had that exact model but they traded it in before they had to attempt getting a propane bottle out. When I saw how their propane bottle was situated my first thought was, how in the heck can you possible get the bottle out for refilling.

I’m surprised you haven’t gotten a response from other Rockwood owners with the same model.

If you can, post a picture so everyone knows what you're dealing with.

I was kind of thinking the same myself, so I used wayback, org to look at the February 2013 Rockwood website. It states that they came standard with two 30 lb cylinders under the "exterior features".

EDIT: To the OP, since I was at the 2013 site and several of the links are still active, here is the Rockwood brochure for your make/model if you want to download it for any future references.

No one from FR monitors this site.

Since no one with your exact model has chimed in, as mentioned several times, post a photo so those of us who don't own that model can do more than guess.

You are correct, just for cooking and hot water a few times a year. We bought the trailer new. There is plenty of room in the compartments for the 30# bottles, just don't see a way to get them out through the door.

Side note..........friend of mine just got a Mobile Suites. They have TWO forty pound bottles (ouch) and they're mounted one behind the other, not side by side. I thought that was stupid when I saw it, but thinking on it, maybe that would make more sense in getting them out.

Your doors/tanks on your Rockwood look just like the doors on our Flagstaff.

I simply remove the LP pigtail, remove the screw and wingnut on the tank bracket, pry the bracket open slightly (by hand) and lift/tilt and remove.

The handle/valve guard on the tank just scrapes the top of the door jamb as it is coming out... but it will come out.

It's not rocket science and not hard to do. You need to narrow done the lip of the door frame for about 1' on either side. Narrow the lip about 1/2 the with of the lip. Cut off tool works great for this. Or a 4' grinder. Get the tank out first. Try bending the lip inward. that may relieve it enough without cutting. This will leave you with enough lip to still seal the door. Really doesn't matter if it doesn't seal as it is open bottom anyway.

how is that black restraining strap attached? can you rotate it so that the nut and bolt are in the middle of the door opening rather than skewed to one side as the photo shows. if so i would think you can simply open the nut and bolt and pull the tank straight out with very little lifting. how are you trying to get it out now? lifting it up so the bottom clears the restraining strap? i may be wrong but it sure looks like it will pull straight out the door.
