Hail!

We were caught out on Lake Lewisville last weekend during the hail storm so will be needing some work done. Fortunately there was no class broken on the RV or my pick up. I patched one of the plastic covers to make sure that it would not leak. I am aware that most all of the vent covers will need to be replaced.

Questions about the roof and the awning? You can see the white spots on the roof and on the top of the awning. The awning was in. I am going to make a wild guess here that with the size of the hailstones my roof is probably going to have to be replaced? I also had both slides out. Since the tops of the slides are perfectly white I'm not able to see where the hailstones hit but I know they did take some hits.

I did a search and a lot of people are saying that hailstones will damage the rubber roof. Does anyone else have thoughts on this damage and the need to have the roof replaced.

Insurance company will be out Monday to look at it.

Truck was also beat up pretty good.

Sorry that happened to you. That is some serious hail. We also got caught in a hailstorm last year. Not as bad as yours though. I suggest you just let the pros handle it. I only saw 6 or 8 dents in my truck The insurance guys took it to a shop, where they looked at it under some "special" light, and found almost 40 dents. Some of the places they said were dented were sooooo slight, I swear there was nothing there. As to the roof on the trailer, if the insurance says patch & not replace, the RV repair place may disagree. There may be some back & forth about what all is required.

We had a weather related claim. We felt like they were fair. In reality the adjuster has to satisfy the company and the customer. My personal opinion is they want to make you happy.

We have had several claims in the last 8ish years(one RV, one auto and rest home) all but one was weather related. I guess fortunately for us there was a "disaster type storm" and they were pretty easy to deal with.

State Farm adjuster was very thorough today. I don't have the money figures yet. I should get that tomorrow. He did go over with me what all they would be replacing and it is pretty much everything on the top side. That will include the RV roof and both of the slide roofs. We are just in a real dilemma on what to do about it. Do we want an RV that has had the roofs replaced or do we want to get them replaced and trade it in? Or possibly just advise an RV dealer that the roof needed to be replaced and trade it in as it is.

I assume you have 2014 8314bss? I see used at around $20k.... I dunno, but don't be surprised if they total it.

It is a 8314 BSS. I had looked around and valued it at around 20K also. I had considered the possibility of them totaling it but what a shame that would be since it's such a good trailer and in such good condition. But as I mentioned, what kind of condition would it be in once I got it back? Would I be able to count on the roof over the long-haul?

Well, I should know by the end of the day. Will keep everyone posted.

Adjuster was back out this morning taking more pictures. He also explained to me that repair was going to be over 10,000 so they would be sending it to another group to determine if it would be totaled. He said I would be hearing from them in 3 to 5 days.

Hummmmm!

Was offered 14k trade assuming no damage (just wanted to know), selling 18-20k used.

Right now inclined to have repaired and camp on. But just wonder how long it takes before a hail damaged roof starts giving problems? 3 roof vents have to be replaced regardless.

Absolutely!
You rig seems to have some age to it.
The roof has already begun to deteriorate. (natural process)
If you can get a new roof membrane, get it resealed properly, new vent covers and new awnings that's like adding new life to your unit.

We have the final estimate now. The insurance company valued our Rockwood 8314 BSS at $20,500. The repair to replace all three roofs is $14,040. We will receive $13,840. Anticipating a possible total we checked with a local RV lot and the guy offered us $14,000 if it was in perfect condition. We did not tell him that it had hail damage at the time.

I checked around at a couple of salvage lots but I have had minimal interest so far. I would feel much better taking the insurance money and getting a decent salvage price for the RV since it's really not damaged other than the roof and awning.

Then just moving on to a new RV.
