How do you get the water filter apart in your Ultra Lite?

I have a 2022 2706ws. The water filter is under the bathroom sink, behind the drain line. I have practically ripped the bracket out of the wall trying to get the canister loose with the included “ wrench”. I had one in a house just like it. Absolutely the worst filter ever made. There is not enough room together anything else in there to loosen. Looking for a solution. Ideas?

Make sure the water pressure is released prior to unscrewing the water filter case. Use the wrench that came with your camper. Personally, I removed the entire water filter canister and by passed it.

They aren't worth the trouble, I removed and bypassed mine too. We use a hose filter and drink water from home in reusable gallon jugs..

My thoughts exactly.

Pressure is off.
I plan on bypassing it, but thought maybe there was a trick.
Thanks.

This may sound dumb but just in case (righty tighty lefty loosie) I also removed mine and mount it on the bumper so I can pull the filter each time and allow it to dry in between uses. Good luck

Not so dumb. Have had that exact problem before, but not this time. 😊😊😊

I knew that it would be a problem when I saw it. I use in line filter going into the camper so I will just take it out.

I think there may be some filters where you have to push up on the canister as you turn it.

Exclamation

I found the wrench they supply is useless. I use a strap wrench on mine.

Cut mine out first night I had the camper. Went to Home depot, got a 1/2" bypass connector and 2 hose clamps and done!

I agree with you! It’s an extremely tight fit and required a lot of strength at an awkward angle to finally loosen it. It will unscrew but it was tough that first time. Now that I’ve screwed it back in I can more easily unscrew it.

I totally agree with RobRockz comment about remove. Many stories out there about housing breaking. Water leaks. Best to have in exterior somewhere else.

If you plan on removing the canister from your system or bypassing it, there are a lot of threads on this forum discussing water filtration alternatives. The Camco blue bullet type of filters are decent at about 20 microns but not as good as you can get. Here's an article that might help you understand the options so you can think about the level of filtration you want to have.

https://rvwaterfilterstore.zendesk.c...what-they-want

I'm using a Pentek CFB-PB10 filter which is a "modified molded (carbon) block" filter rated at 0.5 microns. With decent city water pressure it doesn't restrict the flow noticeably. If there is low pressure on the supply source like a well, you fill your freshwater tank with the filtered water and use your pump for higher pressure to feed the pre-filtered water. We do that at a nearby KOA that has low water pressure.

I too used a strap wrench to open the filter housing.
I couldn’t budge it either with the supplied wrench. In fact, I pulled the mounting bracket away from the 1x2 wood. It was held up with 1” staples.
I WILL be removing this setup and going to outside of trailer.
The concept of having the filter inside is ok but my fear of a leaking gasket or cracked housing is unnerving.

I had same problem years ago. I took it off the wall and took it to a burley young buck. He thought I was a crazy weakling until he tried to get the top off. It took both of us. I never put another filter in it. I didn't like the way the water pressure dropped with the filter anyhow.

On the later versions of the Forest River OE filters without the "ratchet ramp" on the canister the issue is overtightening. They use an O-ring seal and the canister inly needs to be hand tightened enough to load the O-ring, Not so tight the canister contacts the base and "locks" due to friction.

On mine, when finding it tight on first time removing' I put thevwrench jn place then used a short piece of 2x4 as a mallet. Struck the wrench handle a couple times and it came loose.

When reinstalling I replaced O-ring, applied some silicone Faucet Stem Grease (from Home Depot) to the O-ring-, then hand tightened. Works great and I just mess with it once per year.

My filter on my Rockwood Ultra Lite is located outside, at the rear of the unit, behind a locked door, next to the pump. The key is to have all pressure relieved first. And, it IS a two hand operation: one to hold the wall bracket firmly, and the other to use the wrench (or a strap wrench) to loosen the bottom of the cartridge case. While it was difficult to remove the first time, I learned from having a similar whole house filter in my home that, by using a layer of silicon lube or petroleum jelly in and around the rubber seal, and all around the threads, prior to installing a new filter, the next removal is much easier.

Petroleum jelly should not be used on true rubber O-rings as it doesn't play well with the rubber. Crisco or similar vegetable shortening is an inexpensive, commonly found household item that can be used without issue. It will not attack a rubber O-ring.

Correct - thus the reason I said silicon OR petroleum jelly (depending upon the O ring)

Water filter

The trick is pushing up on the bottom of the filter when you are trying to turn it. I also put food grade silicone grease on the O ring when replacing. I understand how hard it is mine was in the “V” of my V front TT-designed to be accessed by a pigmy contortionist. I ultimately removed it do the potential for a leak. That FR-10 filter is a 5 micron VS the hose filters that are 20 micron. I use mine outside on a stand next to water faucet. It is an excellent filter.
