Insufficient Hot Water
Since there is insufficient hot water to take a shower (my wife refuses to do military or cold showers) a salesman told us to try the electric and propane at the same time on our hot water heater. Has anyone done that and does it work?

Yes, most/many/plenty of us have done it and it works. I think I remember hearing that owner's manuals for water heaters contain statements to that effect. Forum members recommend it several times per month.
Have you double checked your heater's bypass valves? There should be enough hot water for at least ONE shower.

It works to a point. Your recovery rate will be faster but you're still only going to have 6 gallons or so of hot water at any given time. If you keep the water running the entire time you're in the shower, you're still likely to run out pretty quick.

i also use both and there is enough hot water for my wife and myself to take showers after each other.
i suggest you get a low flow shower head and tell her to take sea showers lol.

I have a six gallon water heater...
I've found that by running LP and electric it adds maybe a couple of minutes to the shower.
However, if you are opening the faucet valves all the way...you'll be lucky to get maybe two or three minutes tops of hot water!
I open the hot water faucet maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of the way, then adjust the cold to where it is comfortable, and I can get a 10 minute shower easily with just the electric on and still have hot water left over.
Plus, having both LP and electric on will heat up the tank in about five minutes!
So the wait isn't long for the next shower.
Also, dump the stock shower head and get the RV (not Home Depot or Lowe's) version of the Oxygenics Fury from Camping World or other RV store.
That will be the closest you'll ever get to your home shower!

Yes you can use both gas and electric at the same time and it will recover hot water faster. However, if you only have a 6 gallon water heater and your wife continues to wear her princess tiara while camping there’s probably never going to be enough hot water for her.

Your best bet will be a low flow Oxygenics shower head. It adds air to the shower so that it feels like a regular shower, but it uses less water.
One caution though... I can tell the difference when rinsing shampoo out of my hair. The low water flow makes rinsing out shampoo more difficult. It kind of depends on how long hair is.

Yup!
I usually have to change the flow pattern to get the shampoo out to one of the stronger ones with the little flip switch on the side of the shower head.
No big deal, though...

I was thinking the same. Sometimes you run out of hot water real quick due to an incorrect changeover/bypass valve setting.

I'm sorry but you deal with camping, it is not like being at home. We only use gas for hot water for the past 35 years I can shower right after the DW and have plenty of hot water on a 6 gallon tank.
Sorry but I would tell her if she can't conserve water she can either learn to, or go to the bathhouse. But I can say my DW is a farm girl that learned to conserve years ago when she was young. No fancy bling.

There's always an on demand system option. Might be a pain to swap out, but doable.

Yes, you can run electric and propane at the same time. This indeed does heat your 6 gallon tank faster but it is still only 6 gallons and will NOT supply more than 6 gallons of hot water at a time. Good news for your wife though, the shower house never runs out of hot water.

Plenty of hot water for me and my wife to shower. We just don't let it run the entire shower time! Use the shut off on the hand wand.

John, did you perhaps mean totally cold water?
On a three valve bypass system, if the crossover valve is left open, then you will get hot water out of the tank, but it will also quickly draw in cold water from the open crossover valve/line... Which does make the hot water lukewarm or seems like you ran out of hot water.
If you leave the crossover line open, with cold water inlet closed and the hot water outlet closed, you will get nothing but cold water from a hot water tap and it's coming from the crossover line. This is the winterized position.
If you leave the crossover valve/line open, but either the cold water inlet valve or hot water outlet valve closed, you still only get cold water from the crossover line because no hot water can come out the top of the tank without cold water inlet pressure entering the tank to push it out, or the outlet valve being open to allow it to be pushed out
