I have not had an issue with mine leaking but have read the same thing. However I left mine in for many years and had a different issue with dropped water pressure when using a filter, so I stopped using filters for a long time. then I decided one day I had the energy to remove the point of failure and put in a PEX coupler after cutting out the water filter. Mine was more like 4-5 inches but you're just replacing whatever you cut out. PEX requires special tools unless you buy the alligator couplers, then they just snap on.
