Murphy Bed Sofa: 2 cushions vs 3 & affect on quality?

For those floorplans with a murphy bed, there is, of course, a couch that sits there when the bed is up. I have read that during the 2014-2016 (maybe 2017) models this couch can have structural integrity issues ... it sags and gets weak.

I've noticed that in the 2017 models, that some of these couches started having 3 cushions (or sections) in them. Because RV model years blend together and there are myriad mid-year changes, I wondered if this had been a "fix" for the weaker couches.

But, I still see 2 cushion/section couches in the 2018 models. So, I'm sort of confused. Has FR corrected the couch issue or not? Is the 2 vs 3 cushion configuration of the couch anything other than cosmetic? Is there any correlation to quality/durability of the number of cushions/sections?

Thanks.

The Rockwood and Flagstaff Murphy bed models I was looking at were both one piece mattresses. I saw a Lance that had a 3 piece.

I'm not talking about the mattress. I'm talking about the couch. The couch is either 2 cushions/sections or 3.

Unless you buy a TT off the lot that you can actually see, it's kind of a crapshoot on sofas. For a while there, some came with the "armrest-tables" on the sides and some didn't. No rhyme or reason. When we ordered ours, we didn't know if we'd get the armrest/tables or not. We did, which we wanted anyway. At that time, the sofas without the armrest/tables seemed to have a way to open the front bottom of the sofa and there was a large plastic tray under it. Those with the armrest/tables didn't have it. Instead, you had more a "pass-through" under the sofa from the outside storage doors.

Good luck.

I have the 3 cushion version with out the pull strap in my 2017 2504s.
I have had a few problems with it so far. The metal support rod that runs underneath in the middle keeps the springs in place. But the clips were not secure and a few of the springs fell out.
Its very difficult to operate the couch without the strap.
The lower access panel had screws that were stripped and the brackets eventually fell off. The screws were too small.
The cushions seem to sink down quite a bit for a new couch, so i wonder how they will hold up over time.
The frame itself seems solid, but I think i will add additional bolts to help secure it to the couch.

OK, I guess I need to do a better job of framing up my questions. I'm not asking what I'll get or what I'll end up with if I ordered. Yes, I know that there are lots of mid-year changes that get made.

My question was around the strength of the couch. There are threads here that discuss sagging and overall weakness of the couch. I was wondering if this has anything to do with how many sections the couch had.

Here's an example of 3 cushions/sections:

Here's an example of 2 cushions/sections:
Both are 2018 models.

My question is whether FR corrected the couch sagging issue. If so, does the fix have anything at all to do with the number of cushions or sections in the couch?

Thanks.

Ok, i'll simplify my answer to be more in line with your question... No, they have not.
The "sagging" comes from the weak springs and under stuffed cushions, I have the same exact couch in mine as you have pictured minus the strap.

We had a cushion made to go on the couch to stop a lot of the sagging.
2 inch,35 pound density, high quality foam works well.

This was on our 2017 after using it for 1 season. They replaced it under warrentee with a sofa just like the lighter color one you posted.

This is a photo showing the foam ripping on the sides of the sofa.

We have a 2018 with the double sofa. We have spent approximately 21 days off and on since we bought it and (Knock on wood) no problems with integrity of the sofa.

On our 2016 Microlite that we had, the Couch had two cushions and after only one season, there was a definite sag in the couch. You could not tell by looking but you could tell when you sat on it. After much discussion between dealer and Forest River, they did replace the sofa. The issue was with the springs though, not the cushion.

We have a 2015 2504S (that oddly we got in June of 2014, still not sure why it was a '15, but that's beside the point) has the 2 cushions. Havent seen any issues with sag of any kind in ours

We purchased a new 2017 Rockwood 2507 in April of this year. Almost imediatley the sides of the three cushion murpyhy bed began to tear from hitting the folding mechanism. Our dealer tried two more beds, and adjustments, with the same results. Then we tried a two cushion model from another Rockwood. The two cushion must be just a hair shorter and fits like a glove. No tearing, or rubbing, no bending of side mechanism, no sagging or other problems. Off to the Maritimes this week for a 5 week final test.

We have the 2 cushion version murphy bed/couch set up. I sit in it quite a bit as does my wife. We had some friends over that have camped for 30+ years and commented that the couch was very comfortable. Have not seen the issue you describe but will look out for it.

Just wanted to thank those who posted their experiences with the structural integrity of their couches. It would appear that the 2 vs 3 cushion design is not tied to quality. Whether or not FR has responded in any way to the sagging couch issue is unclear, but it would seem that, regardless, the couch design is tied to some other factor: interior color scheme, random incoming parts from the couch vendor, etc.

At this point, I don't believe that I'll care one way or the other what configuration the couch is on my future trailer -- one is not better than the other, with respect to structure and quality.

Thanks again.

Murphy Bed sofa

I have just purchased a 2017 2507s (Manufactured Feb, 2017) with 3 cushion sofa. Originally was going to purchased a 2018 which has the 2 cushion sofa but the cushions are very hard and not comfortable. Hope my 2017 hold up.

Anyone know how to clean this couch? We ended up having a leak on our vent. Replaced the vent, but the couch looks awful.

We have the 2018 model with two cushions and have used it probably 30 times with no problems. However we did pull of the vinyl release strap on first use when flipping up Murphy Bed because they failed to use retainer when assembled
