New Brakes break in time?

So my new minilite only has 60 miles on it. The brakes work but I'm unable to manually lock them and adjustment on the controller seems to have little or no effect. I'm aware it takes a while for the brakes to burnish properly; how long should I expect it to take before they are functioning "normally" and the controller can lock them up when testing? I've used this procedure before bringing the trailer home, but may not have repeated the process enough

I'm wondering the same thing. I cannot get my new 2509S brakes to lock up either with my brake controller turned all the way up.

Burning them in good and hard as instructed. Multiple stops from 40 miles per hour.
Then go home and adjust them correctly.
Do not count on them to auto adjust.

Make sure your TT battery is fully charged and your ground wire between TT and TV is good. Both can cause low power on for the brakes.

Brakes

You are not supposed to be able to lock the brakes up the brakes on your tv don't lock up if you try to stop fast and the brakes lock up on the trailer you may jackknife .

I think adjustment is the key word here.... assuming all 12V stuff is in tact.

Not quite following this. TV supply's brake power, not the tt battery. I will agree the ground needs to be good. TT battery only comes into play IF the breakaway switch is activated, as I understand things. If I'm wrong will someone please educate me?

The brakes on my Dexter axles under the camper, after doing several stops from 30-40 mph with the trailer brakes alone probably took another 500 miles of "regular" driving before they really started working well.

On the Tekonsha Prodigy controller, I started out with the volts set to about 10 and the boost set to 1 (*), and as the brakes burnished in and the magnets seated, I was able to lower the max volts down to about 7. I like the boost set to "1"... but that's a preference thing. And, as with all things, your mileage may vary.

If they APPLY WE'LL, why would you want to lock them up?

Good luck

Should be able to lock them up manually in a parking lot etc to make sure they are burnished. When burnished in I should be able to back off the control below maximum. You would not want them to lock up under normal use.

Yes this is the procedure I followed but I dont think I was aggressive enough. the brakes never reached that smoking hot level referenced.

You don't want them that hot. You want them to cool down between each stops.

Lipperts recommendation is to get them really hot.
I left a link in a previous post to the Lippert burnishing procedure. I would not have thought you would get them that hot.

If you look at burnishing instructions from brake material manufacturers, you don't get them so hot they are smoking. If you do that, you have glazed the brake lining.

Not according to the procedure.

Reference "More Aggressive Burnishing Method For The Skilled Technician", Line Item #9. The listed gun temperatures for both procedures are the same.

Lest you say he is not a skilled technician, I say that the brakes are not smart enough to know the difference.

New Brakes break in time?

I am of the experience and opinion that getting the brakes “smoking hot” will not/cannot be good for them. I sold friction material for 25 years and NEVER heard to get them that hot. Memory tells me 3-4 45MPH to 10MPH?? Semi aggressive stops. These are passenger and LT truck services of course.
Overheating the friction material causes it to crystallize which causes it to break and crack which causes premature failure.

It is your RV and brakes....do as you will.

I can’t remember on my 150 but I know the 350 had brake settings light medium and heavy for brake controller. Have you checked that.
