new Geo Pro 19FD + Step Above design problem?

I just got back from my first big trip with it. Overall it went well, but there's one issue - if I have to level the trailer by putting blocks under the left (non-door) side wheel, the screen door won't close.

Even on perfectly level ground and unloaded, the steps just barely go down far enough to close the screen. This iw with the adjustible legs retracted as far as they will go.

It looks like the adjustible legs are just way too long.

Did thye put hte wrong steps on my trailer?

SOLVED - replacement/modified step extensions

I talked the manufacturer MorRyde. and they said it sounded like I needed the step legs that did not take a 90 degree turn. They sent me a set.

They had the same issue, but since they were straight I was able to just 4 inches off the back side. This now allows the steps to go fully down, even if the ground slopes up slightly on that side.

I'm going to communicate this to Forest River - this is really a design flaw.

I had this issue at my last camp site. Legs all the way in. I had to scrape some dirt and gravel away beneath one of the legs so the threshold plate on the steps would lay flat against trailer threshold. Can you take a pic of the new legs they sent?

I've attached the schematic they sent me of the replacement legs:

so all the way in the new legs allow stairs to go lower, and the threshold plate to lay flat? Looks like those legs have a lot more holes for finer adjustments.

Only if I cut off some from the back side, which I did. I started with 3 inches (to the last hole) and may go more.

So i just put a lift kit on mine, and i need your type of extensions. i will trade you. i have the ones that are strait and do not have the 45 at the end like yours. Do you not have the lift kit on your rig? you have the extensions for the off road package. thats why they are to high

I do beleive the unit I got was supposed to have the off-road package. The tires certainly have more bite.

Unfortunately I do not have the old ones anymore to give you.

I have on occasion had to completely remove the adjustable leg on one side and used a thin shim under that side to make the stairs go down enough so the threshold plate was low enough to close door. I've found a few pieces of wood of various thickness have been useful depending on terrain, anything from paint stirring sticks, to something thicker.

We had to make an adjustment to the plate.

So far I’m not a big fan of these steps.

Very irritating to adjust at every camp site.

The old school steps are way better unless you are setup for long periods of time or only camp at perfectly level parks.

Also, many times we have to use a leveling block on one leg.

They are rock solid though once they are leveled. Not all jiggling/squishy feeling like the ones that don't touch ground. Wow, I've never needed a hammer though. Sounds like ladder was not leveled on one occasion and sill plate got bent? Design could be improved by having a 'ratcheting/notched' design rather than those holes spread so far apart with a pin through the hole. This would allow more minute leg length changes instead of fiddling with shims.

This is exactly the issue I am having...The screen door rubs the bottom. Since I have only used it twice and had not figured out what to do until looking at it again this spring.
Not sure if I call dealer or MorRyde for leg replacments?

The threshold plate has to be completely flat across the doorway. If it's tilted at all, the legs need to be adjusted. Right now at home because of slope of driveway, I have the left leg all the way in, and the right leg I had to remove completely and put blocks of wood beneath where the leg used to be.

They had to adjust door at delivery as I could see light around curved section. Not sure if it was really adjusted correctly. One leg shorter than other..,Hell, I’ve been dealing with that almost 40 to years from a car accident!!

Can you provide any info or links on your lift kit? I am buying a used GP without lift and am very interested in this mod.
Thanks

Wow I am glad to run into you folks. Taking delivery of 19FD (lift kit) in 10 days and will certainly look into this at PDI and on future trips. This is SW Utah and most of what we will be doing is not real level or paved

All of the campsites I've used so far are pretty level. I figure if I have issues with the steps where even removing the sliding adjuster doesn't do the trick, I can always put some boards under a wheel and make it work. At some campsites, I've scraped a bit of gravel out from under a leg. These steps are rock solid when properly contacting the ground. My recommendation is have a couple boards or shims of varying thickness with you in case you need to make some fine adjustments.

We had the same issue. If you take the leg out and look down inside you can see that the nuts for the mechanism that locks the steps up for traveling get in the way. I've cut a 1.5" slot to allow the leg to go past the nut. It may need to be longer, I'll try it tonight.

If you ever have a problem where the door seems to be binding when you close, fold the steps up and check the screws connecting to the floor of the trailer. Several of mine were loose, and a couple don't even have anything to bite into.
