Pleated Day / Night Shades

My new Rockwood 8299bs has a broken string on the rear shade that covers the rear window. The trailer is 8 months old.....Would this be covered under warranty?... If so, would be a lot easier than restring it. Thanks....

actually restringing is probably easier... depending on your dealer that is...

call them and see if you can bring in the old one and get a new one... some dealers require you to pull the trailer in, and leave it until they get authorization... so really depends on the dealer.

I have restrung those curtains several times... not that difficult... difficult part is getting cord that will not deteriorate in UV...

For me, the difficult part was getting the tension just right on the string after reinstalling the shade. Restringing was relatively simple although I didn’t have to do the very large shade in the back of a 8299BS.

Paverdave, check out videos on YouTube by Rvgeeks and FixMyBlinds to see how to restring the shades.

But, to answer your question, yes, that that day/night shade with the broken string should be covered under warranty.

IMHO you might as well learn how to resting anyway because sooner or later you'll probably need to know how. Watching the u-tube videos helped me.

The question is one of time. I'm sure the dealer will do it, but they might tell you they are six weeks behind on repairs, and you don't want your rig to sit at the dealer for six weeks waiting for that level of repair, IMHO. So it is worth asking them.

I know you didn't ask, but we are much happier after just replacing those shade with plantation blinds.

I have restrung 2 of mine. Relatively easy, take your time if you rush it can confuse you. Videos on YouTube work well. You can get restring kit on Amazon for a few windows pretty cheap, good luck.

Quick story. String on big shade broke. Past warrantee, and I had the dealer fix it. I then restrung a couple of the small shades myself. Then a string on the big one broke again so we decided to replace the shade with mini-blinds. Problem with that is that our two recliners are tied down almost against the window, so we travelled with the blinds pulled up. Then a string on the blind broke. We've just replaced the blind with a curtain. If I have trouble with that, I may just paint the picture window black.

When you re thread string watch for the metal eyelets . I had one that was bent and had a sharp edge which cut the cord . Straightened it re strung it has been good 2 years now.

Before you paint it black, try a black privacy window cling. They're pretty easy to put on once you get used to them, and they remove cleanly, look pretty good, etc.

if you do try restringing yourself make sure that you get UV resistant cord...
back in the 90's I had a conversion van with several pleated shades that broke one after the other about 2 years into having them. I asked a friend of mine to help me find some cordage the proper size and color. She was an expert with sewing, draperies and such. She got me exactly what was needed and they never broke again with the replacement UV resistant cord I used to restiring. That was well before the internet... I NEVER could understand why a sun-shade would be made of materials that could not resist breaking down by UV rays??? Kind of like selling boating accessories that are prone to rusting!

I searched for cord on amazon and found this... you may want to compare colors and thickness of the cord before ordering...

hope this helps...

How about fishing line?

The large rear window blind in our Rockwood has broken more than once...and so have several of the smaller side ones! We tried restringing, but these were different from any on the YouTube videos in that here was no way to get to the center "crossing" -- the entire thing was a solid piece of plastic. Anyway, our repair guy somehow fixes it, but it ain't cheap.

I asked if we could possibly use fishing line next time!? Guess not.

If we were keeping the rig, we would definitely replace the blasted things with something else...anything else!

We had one break under warranty period. I talked to the dealer and he ordered me one. I just exchanged the broken one for the new one. I did have to do the remove and replace though which was no big deal. Sure didn't want to be pulling the trailer down there for one blind.

Pleated Day/Night Shades

After your warranty runs out in the future, try "the dirty blind man" for repair. He is very reasonable and will restring and clean your blinds. Check his web page out at Rv Shade Repair Kit - The Dirty Blind Man Llc.
