Power loss to overhead lighta

Hello, I am new to the forum and could use assistance.
I purchased a 2022 rockwood signature 8336bh and am staying in it for a few weeks.
It is hooked up to a 50 amp service and after four days I had a brown out of sorts. I was able to get a 30 amp pigtail and all seemed fine. The 50 amp breaker was changed at the post and when hooked back up everything was back to normal.
later the same evening the overhead lights dimmed and the fridge (gas/electric) was losing power. I hooked back up to the 30 amp and same problem. Oddly all the outles, TVs, appliances (besides the fridge) worked.
Almost seemed as they are running off the battery stored from the solar panel, can this be? am I missing a easy fix? or can this be a shore power issue

Thank you ... John

Sounds like converter is not charging battery or you have a bad battery

Welcome to the forum.

I suspect the pedestal. Contact the office and have them send out their electrician to check the plug. Lots of things can happen to damage them and it was probably damaged before you plugged in.

Do you have a surge protector that you can plug into that 50 amp plug on the pedestal? That will tell you if there's a problem at the post. You need a surge protector to protect the electronics in your rig. You can get a basic one for under $60 that will detect problems.

This is a brand new unit, so battery is probably not the problem.

To answer your question. It is possible you're only operating off the battery.

Plugging into a 30 amp will get you power, but not the power that you need to power all the items in the rig.

If it's not the post, contact your dealer and see if they can send a mobile mechanic out to check your rig.

I would check the reverse polarity fuse(s) to see if they are good.

The lights and fridge should continue to run off the shore power but seem to tail off with the solar storage.
I am going to have the service checked, I do think that may be the issue.
Any advice on if the ac should be turned on the solar panel? I do have a hard wired inverter

Thank you

I get the idea that the 120vAC is working - just not the 12vDC stuff - which would lead me to believe the pedestal is OK but the system is not charging the battery.

I don't have a 50 amp rig, but the OP does. Educate me please..... if she's got a 50 amp rig and she's using a 50 to 30 amp adapter, wouldn't that cause only certain things to work?
Her problems seem to stem from plugging into the 50 amp plug on the pedestal. Or am I reading that wrong?

The 30 amp pigtail effectively wires one 30 amp power leg to both sides of the power panel so items across the entire panel receive power - although power is limited to the 30 amp breaker in the pedestal. That’s why everything can run but not at once.

I agree with Mr. Dan. I would be looking at the converter instead of the pedestal. It's the DC stuff in the RV that is not working, the AC side seems to be working fine.

This is a brand new rig. They don't want to do anything to void the warranty. They need to be in contact with their dealer.
Perhaps the dealer can arrange for a mobile mechanic to come and diagnose and fix the problem

Agree, but I would do a quick test on the battery to see if it is at the proper voltage level then you at least know if the converter is charging it or not.

You're supposing replacing a bad fuse would void the warranty? (not saying it's for sure a bad fuse)

All I said was...."This is a brand new rig. They don't want to do anything to void the warranty." A brand new rig with a bad converter, a blown fuse, a 50 to 30 amp adapter to run things in the rig? If it's not the campsite plug, then the rig definitely has a problem.
With the reports lately of campsite 50 amp plugs being incorrectly wired, I'm suspicious which is why she needs a surge protector or EMS to see if that's the problem.

Checking voltages with a voltmeter is not going to void any warranty.

No argument here.

John, can you please post a pic of the electrical panel inside your RV. I am wanting to see if perhaps you have the reverse polarity fuses to the converter in the panel (however some are on the converter itself). These fuses can sometimes blow due to inrushes of current.

Please read posts # 1,2, and 5 in this FAQ thread link below to see these reverse polarity fuses and understand the converter function.

Had a tech come out, turns out the converter was bad. Two 30 amp fuses on the converter were good and did not blow. I am in contact with the dealer now hoping to recoup some expenses.
Learned a bunch about how RV electrical systems work. Thank you for the help.

I have a 2018 rockwood signature 8288wsa it has 50 amp plug , I use the adapter for 30 amp and can run everything at once without any problems. My owners manual says I only need 50 amp service if running 2 AC unit at the same time.
