Not sure I'm following you here. The 50 amp 120/240 volt split phase service outlet only has 240 volts across the two hot legs (L1 and L2).
However his RV will not utilize 240 volts. It will utilize each leg (the L1 and the L2) as separate 120 volt lines....as everything in the RV is 120 volts.
As far as testing the outlet, it should be as below for a properly wired 14-50R. The slots marked Y and X are the L1 and L2 hot legs.
The voltage between Y and X should be 240-Volt, X and W 120-Volt, Y and W 120-Volt, X and G 120-volt, Y and G 120-volt, W and G 0-Volt
