Rockwood 8281ss

Just bought my first camper sitting in the yard trying it out. I can't wait to take it out on a real trip.

to the forum! We also own a 8281SS and love it. We also live in Phoenix AZ, so we may wait for the weekend so that we may go camping, we may wait for additional vacation time so that we may go camping, but we never wait for a season so that we may go camping.

(*** Please don't get upset with me for gloating. It is one of the few perks we have for surviving 120 degree summer days! )

We live in south Louisiana and we just spent our first weekend camping in the driveway. Looking forward to next weekend, when we leave the yard and go somewhere.

Welcome! Another 8281SS owner here as well. Temps here in MI hit almost 50deg F this weekend and expecting to see a lot more snow melting temps this week. Can't wait to take the camper out again this season.

Enjoy and Happy Camping!

Welcome from another 8281SS owner...mine is buried under snow ...just thinking that I picked it up last year around this time and there was barely any snow.

Hello all,
I am a proud owner of a 2011 8281SS as well. We picked ut up last year and were able to use it a couple times. We love the floor plan and the features. However we have had many, many quality related issues with the camper that I sincerely hope none of you have to deal with. We just returned from a hefty trip from North Branch MI, to Savannah, GA to Orlando, FL. to Nashville, TN and home. I think most of the bugs are worked out but I still have to return it to the dealer for some things. I think I have had nearly every quality issue there could be. If I can help any of you with issues you might be having please dont hesitate to contact me. Happy Camping!

hello, i have a 2012 rockwood signature ultralite 8280ws 5th and was wondering if anyone out there has had the same problem as i do. the distance from the top of the tires to the top of the wheel well is 1 1/2 inches. and this has already put a hole one. camping.

We've had our 8280WS for two years and many towing miles without an issue. The tires are hitting at the top of the wheel well? On both sides?

I'll get a clearance measurement for you tommorrow.

sounds almost as if the axles might be flipped wrong . unless it has torsions then I would say maybe the wrong weight ratio .

by the way welcome to the forum !

They're Alko torsion axles...should be rated for 4000 lbs.

he should probably verify the axle weight rating on the axle sticker then wouldn't you say? An inch and a half isn't near enough .

last year we took a trip from BC to Ont. and by the time we got home the bearings, brakes, and tires on both sides were pulling apart. We had everything replaced and now this is what we have now. So not sure where to start with new problem.

Rockwood uses Al-ko torsion axles on their campers. Here's a link

AL-KO Kober - Rubber Suspension Axles

The hub/spindle assembly is mounted on an arm that pivots. Is the position of those arms different on one side compared to the other. They should be roughly horizontal, which is the middle of their travel.

I checked mine this morning...1 1/2" clearance on both sides between the tire and the top of the wheelwell. There's no evidence of a tire rub at the top of the wheelwell on all 4 positions. For interest sake, I'm going to support the axle on one side at the frame and jack up that spindle to the top of it's travel. I think there will still be clearance to the top of the wheelwell. I'll post the results.
