Rockwood 8329SS

Hello All! My wife and I have been looking at a Rockwood Signature ultra lite, 8329SS. The layout seems to fit what we are looking for, but I am concerned about the durability of the unit overall considering all of the electronics aboard. Does anyone have any experience that is willing to share with US? I can't rely on just a salesmans pitch for this. Thanks for your input and help!!

We are on our 2nd Rockwood camper. We bought our 2011 Rockwood Signature Ultra Lite 8293SS used in 2015. It’s been an excellent unit. We’ve had no significant issues with it. The previous owner replaced the vacuum breaker valve on the black tank flush line. The only things we’ve had are a slightly loose water fitting at the water pump and last year I replaced one of the ball valves on the water heater bypass. Both very simple fixes.

Nothing is perfect but I think Rockwoods are above average in quality and amenities - especially the Signature series. When looking at other makes, including other Forest River brands, at RV shows, I certainly have seen a much better fit and finish on Rockwood trailers.

I would definitely recommend Rockwood to friends and family. I would like to eventually move to a 5er and it will very likely be a Rockwood Signature Ultra Lite.

We took delivery of our 8312ss last July. I made the mistake of not getting on the roof during the PDI. My bad 😞. We took it back to the factory in November to have the roof replaced. It didn't turn out much better, and they put a white roof on it. It's supposed to be color matched. The control panel wouldn't pair to Bluetooth from day one, they replaced it when we were there. During the winter the coraplast has dropped down in the rear, it had about 1/4 of adhesive holding it up. Still in conversation with Rockwood as to what they are going to do about the roof. If it were me I would pass on a Forest River product, but from what I hear the quality is lacking with all the manufacters.

we have a '16 8329ss and just love the hell out of it. So far we have had 2 issues. One was a problem with the fridge that I could have had warrantied, but I took care of it myself for about $3 and 15 minutes of my time. The other issue was the plastic under-skirting came detached. That was fixed at the Goshen rally by the service techs.

This is my second FR product, and 4th camper overall. I find the quality can be variable from unit to unit, but as a whole still as good or even better than any other manufacturer with the exception of maybe Airstream and Lance, but they want 3x the money for theirs.

I tell people have an open mind, and don't get hung up on relying on the warranty to make everything good. Of course, if my fridge was truly hosed, I would have gotten in replaced under warranty, but the fix was simple and cost less than the fuel that would have been required to haul it back up to the dealer.

In my experience, the plumbing is where most campers of all brands seem to have the most issues. A little maintenance like checking tightness of fitting every so often goes a LONG way. While there are lemons out-of-the-box like Yeti's to be sure, it seems that some people buy a camper, use it for 3-4 years, never really maintain it and then scream bloody murder about the 'lousy quality'.

Again, I love my 8329. Its been a great camper so far.

Tim

Hello. All RVs are not made with the highest standards. Its all about efficiency during production. Now each manufacturer is doing what they can to ensure the highest quality they can within a budget.

With that being said, we have the 8329ss (our second trailer), it is a 2018, which we purchased from RVONE in Buffalo. It was ordered with the options we wanted. 50A service, prep for second AC in the future, tank heaters, 3 MAXAIR fans and covers, Auto Level System.... The layout was what we liked about this trailer as it fit our lifestyle well. The queen bed is a bit small for us, but works. Luckily if we want, I can rip out the side tables and add a king bed, (it wasn't a factory option at the time). Regardless its a good layout. It does seem to lack outside storage and even inside can initially look like there isn't a lot either, however there is plenty for us. Since this camper isn't made for a huge family, you don't need as much storage. For us, it seems appropriate if you include the bed of the truck for the grill, and other tag along items.

The trailer is not terribly heavy. Its under (8300lbs dry) mine is just under 9000lbs with the 15k AC, the 60lb propane, ~20gal water, food and clothes and the slide toppers. The tongue weight is heavy though, it is just under 1200lbs, so keep this in mind. I am using a Husky WDH with 800-1200lb bars. If this is something that isn't set in stone, I'd recommend a heavier set of bars for stiffness if you have a lighter truck. (such as a 1500)

Now as for your question on the electronics ... Since my trailer was one of the first production models off the floor for the 2018 model year last year, we had a few issues (minor).
1. We did need our Control Panel replaced under warranty, for the Bluetooth connectivity issue, however that didn't stop the function of the system. The issue has since been resolved and all new units should work fine. Its really not that great of an app and doesn't work as well as Id like, so I wouldn't expect much from this 'bell & whistle'.
2. Since the dining chairs are real wood, there are bound to be imperfections in the wood itself. Case in point, one of my chairs broke the first time someone sat in it. It cracked the back leg right through a large knot. Its not that big of a deal and was replaced.

That is all of the warranty issues i have had with this unit. I am very handy so if there was anything else wrong then I fixed, replaced or modified it to my liking.

A few modifications so far include: Underbody lighting for night repairs or night setups, electric dump valves for when you take a shower and forget the tank is full . The dump valves replace the manual pull for each dump and has a switch for it. I added a second switch inside under the sink for dumping while in the trailer. To do this and ensure its working properly, i added a $20 backup camera from ebay. This came with a display that has a master switch to turn the dump system on and the screen comes on so I can see the whole thing as if i was outside. I then added a hose quick disconnect under the sink in the bathroom to attach the black tank wand to and clean the take MUCH easier that dragging a hose inside each time. We do not use the black tank flush as it does not thoroughly clean the tank. I prefer a clean tank each trip and this was much easier to just do from the inside rather than outside in the rain, cold, heat or track mud and dirty water throughout the trailer. I have also added light shades for all of the puck lighting as it seemed to blind me when I walked into the trailer and sat in the seats. I also changed out the refrigerator fan outside as it was loud sometimes in the heat. I added some ducting and pathways for the air to flow with 3 fans at a lower speed tapped into the thermostat that controlled the original fan. I also added a heat strip to the AC unit to help in cooled weather, it worked well. We also do some off grid camping at NASCAR races and needed an easy way to plug our 120VAC things into as we are only on battery or generator. So at night with no generator running I use an Inverter with a custom made transfer switch. This allows uninterrupted power to my appliances when i switch from generator to battery using the existing trailer wiring to the outlets. I am sure there is a lot more I have done, i just don't remember everything i do.

I went way off topic, but want to share the experiences so you as a possible new owner of the same trailer can understand what to expect.

We also opted for the Auto Level. This works pretty well. Some times it actually works better and stabilized the trailer more if 1 or 2 wheels were off the ground, taking the suspension out of the sway and rocking. The auto level needs some understanding however. There are limitations to how level you need to be to start. You need to understand that the front levelers operate differently than the back and the fronts require more stroke to lift the trailer (there is a mechanical advantage to the lever arm of the leg). The rear only has about 6" of stroke and needs blocks under it to ensure you can level the trailer. We camp in VERY off level sites so we are very familiar with how this system works and why it has errors often. Its usually something that we didn't setup correctly to allow it to work. Once we figured out its tricks and how it operates, we have had many successful setups. The manual helps if you can find it (I have put it up on the forums somewhere).

Here are a few pictures of our trailer for your enjoyment!

We have a 2016 8329ss with the Diamond package purchased new in 2016. We like it a few small things I fixed myself mainly loose water fittings. I would recommend is a second AC unit. We have the upgraded 15,000 BTU air and when it gets above mid 80’s it has trouble keeping up.

2018 8329ss

We have a new 2018 8329SS and so far we really it. We took it south in Dec and have pulled it for 4,000 + miles. I hardly know its there behind our 3/4 GMC. The layout is the best one we have lived in. Our last FR was a 2014 windjammer with axle issues (4,000 lb. /5 lug) The 8329SS has been upgraded to 5.000 lb / 6 lugs.Get them on your 35' TT! Also switched to Load range E tires before we took it off the dealers lot.
The fridge in the slide has a horrendous fan so we ordered a pair of quiet fans from Coolerguys.com with a thermostat module. It keeps the original fan from coming on. I did add hinges to the top vent door to let heat out passively. See pic.
We just lost the propane function of the water heater this week so will wait for our Vt dealer to warranty this spring. The circuit board is fried. I was glad to discover the 120 volt heating element still functions.
Overall we are pleased with these features the most:
All three slides have older HD style rack/pinon style/one slide motor (read no swyntek)
5,000 axles. (wish they were 7,000#)
Improved residential drawer slides.
larger gas fridge.
The over all fit and finish is tight.
Thanks FR for the upgrades. We totally recommend this TT and our dealer : Vermont Country Campers.

We have the 2017 8329SS and love it. Just so much space. The first thing we did when we got it home was remove the dinette table and chairs and put them in the attic. Replaced it with euro recliner. With the island and stools not much need for it. The fan for the fridge is the only problem we had, really noisy. Replaced it and added another one. It does have a lot of tongue weight, 1024 for mine, and no rear storage to offset. Really love the trailer.

Another thing, be careful with the wardrobe door catches. They are very cheap and break easily.

Rest of the story :~)

I am the guilty one here. I should know better!! However Buyer beware
Our 2014 windjammer did the same thing under warranty. I have a 4 month old 2018 8329 SS & am in FL now. I pulled into a friends driveway & got set up. Including placing a hose into the gravity fill tank with just a 1/4 turn on the hose valve & walked over to say hello and visit the garden. DUH. Never do that!!! Ouch. Less than 10 mins later I got my second look at how FR attaches their water tanks!!!.
The Aft side of the tank rests on angle iron attached end to end to a floor beam & looks fine. The front angle iron bent with the weight of a filled tank assisted by the pressure of the water hose placed in fill tube..So .. Is the front angle iron - with out any additional / floor beam contact supported well across 6' ??? maybe not!!! Do I feel good carrying a full water tank down the road in my "Travel Trailer" NO!!!
Lesson learned here! I need to bring this to my welder when I get back to VT so I don't have to worry about this issue again. Cheers!

Water tank

Speaking of water tanks, has anyone ever considered or heard of anyone replacing the fresh water tank with another gray water tank? I know that there would be some re-piping that would come into play however I could really use the extra gray water capacity and I never use the fresh water tank.

yikes. i would have assumed the overflow would have prevented this.

we love our Rockwood signature ultra light. had other RVs, mallard, prowler, starcraft over the last 40 years. can say enough about our positive experience in the rockwood.

The first picture shows the factory fan and mounting. The fan draws air up and over the cooling fins at the top. There is a thermostat mounted to one end that will trigger the fan on and off when the temperature threshold is met. You can see its just a simple muffin fan 12v @ 4.7w. PN PF92251B1-00U-A99 by Sunon which is running at 4500RPM with 47db noise @ 75cfm (LINK).

The second pic is a quick sketch of what I did with larger fans with a much slower speed and noise level. I made sure that the CFM flow of the 3 fans was more than the factory to ensure without calculating, that I am moving the same amount of air, even if the 3 fan method was more efficiently moving the air across all of the fins evenly. (sorry i don't have a pic). I just used the wiring that was already there and made sure the temp sensor still worked to turn them on. The wiring was thin so I also made sure the current draw didn't surpass the current rating of the wires as I added more fans.

I did need to add a few pieces of aluminum tape to the top along with some metal ducting that I made from a disposable aluminum cooking pan. The aluminum tape just made sure it was all sealed up to help direct the air over the fins and out the vent (and not over the top of the fridge).

I swear that the OEM fan is 60db. It was LOUD! now you cant hear them at all and we have not had any issues with temps. Actually they were better in the sun and heat.
