Rockwood Ultra Light- heating system
My heater when switched to electric heat, is just blowing cold air. Now it just so happens that my propane tanks are empty.
Does an electric heat system still use propane to keep pilot lit?
Had to come home tonite bec it got so cold in rv
Any help would be appreciatedvv

Are you talking about heat strips or heat pump, in the a/c?
Is your thermostat turned to AUTO?

You need propane to run your furnace and there is no "pilot flame" on your furnace, it's 12v electronic. If you have heat strips in your A/C units, you need to switch your thermostat to "heat strips", however, this will at best, probably only take some of the chill off the unit on a cold night.

Ok. That explains it. Heat was blowing but only cold air. I don’t have heat strips.
Big help. Thank you.
Now to find where to change out these large tanks. I’m such a rookie

You'll be getting those tanks refilled. Bring them to a filling station, most RV dealers do it and some places like home and garden supply stores.

After you get your tanks filled, be sure to turn one on after reinstalling them. Next, go to the stove and turn on a burner to get the air out of the line. It may take several tries and a "minute to so" to clear out all the air. Once the air is out of the line the stove will light. Now turn on the furnace and it should light right up.

You need to check the spec sheet on your trailer to see if one of your ac’s have electric heat. I have two ac’s and I found the one in my bedroom has electric heat. I had to contact Forrest River to find this out.

As soon as one is empty, switch over and refill the empty. You will never run out. Some campgrounds have bulk propane. BJ's wholesale has it and will sell to non-members. There is no exchange for 30# tanks. Always keep one tank turned off.

Thx. Yes, I have 1 electric and 1 propane but as I understand it, I still need propane for the electric one.

Propane is used for your furnace not your A/C's. Propane is not run to your roof. One of your units is a heat pump ( reverse cycle a/c) with electric heat strip. Some units use the Fan only of the A/C to move hot air provided by the furnace. Get out your manual and read up.

If one of your units has a strip heat in it you do not have to use your furnace. What that means is you a/c will turn on the strip heat @ 50 degrees. It will shut off the compressor at that temp and be using the strip only. If your not counting pennies, I would use whichever id quieter.

Hmmm. I tried electric heat unit last night and it only blew cold air.
Dealer seemed to indicate that the heat strip unit is only good for nights over 55.
Is that not right?

The heat strips will work down to about 40 degrees. But it is like standing there using your blow dryer to warm up the camper. Anything thing under say 50 it's best to use the furnace. We use the heat strips in the spring and fall to take the chill off and not add as much mosture to the air. One thing for sure is it takes a long time to warm the coach up on heat strips.
