Roof vent and wires

So I took the interior frame off from around the roof vent in the bedroom and noticed there were red and black wires running through the opening but not sure what they are for? Could Forest River have pre-run wires for optional fan hook-ups?

It's pre wired for a air conditioner. Most TT and TH are pre wired for the available option of a second air conditioner. I helped a buddy add a second ac to his and quite simple with the pre ran wires.

Many manufactures also pre-wire for vent fans at vents so be careful if you want to hook up a 2200 watt A/C that the wiring is rated for that. They would be heavy duty wires compared to your lighting wires for example.

My living space vent is pre-wired for a fan with light duty wires. If the wires are meant for A/C then of course you could wire a fan to them.

If the camper was pre-wired for a 2nd A/C, it would also have 50A service instead of 30A. If your camper is 30A service, thoese wires will be 12V for an optional power fan in the roof vent.

Roof Vent Wires

You mention that they are running through. They may be going to a light. If they are ended in the vent and you don't have a fan in the vent then they are for a future vent fan. With the coloring you mentioned they are most likely 12V. Frank

They do run thru, and are not directly in line with the lights but I thought the same thing. Just wondered if they could be tapped for a fan. Lighting is LED so I think not much draw from them.

Don't see why not. The red should be the positive and the black should be negative/ground. check the voltage and polarity. If it all checks out go for it. Frank

Yeah don't bet on it!

Black 12v on a camper is "normally" hot fyi.

Automotive yes .
Rv - crap shoot. Your better off checking polarity before the melting process

One you check the polarity, yes you can. That's what I did in my last camper for a vent fan. I tied into the wiring for a near by unswitched ceiling light.

I had to do this with my 8280WS because the main cabin vent wasn't prewired. I had to tunnel through the Styrofoam insulation with a straightened coat hanger. Quite a mess!

I installed another light that I got that was directly inline with all of the other light fixtures. I "tunneled through the foam as well, and found the wires- same as what are on the other lights downstream from there. Looks like a factory install. Incidentally, there was 4 wires found- 2 for lighting, and 2 for the fantastic fan. Both pairs were molded together in two's, like a power cord to a 120v plug, but smaller gauge. Randy
