RV waste tote transport

Recently picked up a Barker waste tote. DW says no way is it getting transported in the bed of the truck ( and I agree ). Looks like the only place that will work on our TT is the roof access ladder. Pretty sure I can work something out for securing it to the ladder. However, asking to see how others might have done this. Sometimes others have great ideas that would never have occurred to me.

Thanks,
Tuckerdog1

Don't look in the bed of my truck...that is where mine goes :-)

Have seen several ways. Use a cargo rack on the rear of the RV and store it there. Attach it to the ladder on the rear of your RV...if you have one. For that, you can use the device used to carry step ladders, chairs etc.

We carry ours in the bed of the truck when going somewhere it's needed.
Curious as to why you wouldn't consider hauling it there?

I have found that if you have NOT "Ripped/Torn/Drug" off your "Step Boxes" you can MFG supports for Under Frame use/storage as long as the Supports don't hang Below the "Step Box"! Youroo!!

What is wrong with carrying it in the bed of the truck?

If I were to guess at the reasoning for not wanting it in bed of the truck. It would be that there are other items in the bed and there is always the possibility of cross contamination.

I have mine on the back of the camper. Made a “cage” that it sits in which I u-bolted to the bumper, next to the spare tire. And I’m in the process for making another “cage” to store the sewer hose connections so they’re not in a storage compartment “inside” the camper.
In a few days when I get to the back of the camper, I’ll post a pic.

We carry ours in the Truck bed.

We don't worry about cross contamination because we NEVER use it for black water, only for gray water.

Unless you have a small black tank or are dry camping a long time, I just don't see the need for using it for black water.

Tuckerdog,I Read "Real Plain" that your family said NO to bed of Truck! So like I said before here Might be a Idea/Solution! BAL "Hide-A-Spare" Underslung #28216 made for Covered underbelly units! The Original "Barker 30 Gal Tote is 8-3/4 high" close to tire width,so with a Little "Engineering" and not below the "Step Box" you Might please your Family! Youroo!! We both have V-Nose units sitting on Torsion Axles and 15" tires,I mounted My spare tire in the Front under the frame, cable lift like a PU spare,it has NEVER been in "Harms Way"!

Although I have a Class A, which may not apply to your case, I store mine up underneath the camper between the two main frame members. Regardless, do some thinking outside the box and see if there is somewhere underneath your TT that you can lash it to with some ratchet straps. (Make sure you have clearance while driving.)

Cool Carrying the waste tank

We tow with a big Ford van, so I just put the tote in a large plastic bag and put it in the back. Before I used it for Black water (once) last summer) I put it in the van directly, no bag needed.

There is no accounting or answer to a squeamish spouse, so you just need to do what makes them happy.

The "hang on the ladder" approach can be the easiest, since ladder mounts for chairs and bicycles are readily available (hose clamping "L" brackets to the ladder can also work). The "under the rig" approach will likely require some some quality time with a band saw and a welder, but could be a clean way to make it happen.

"Store in the bed" seems to be the most popular with the truck crowd, so that is why there are not so many commercial solutions available.

Good luck!

Towing the Honey Wagon

Can I ask a somewhat-related question? Last weekend we heard someone's rig leaving the campground. It was making an odd noise. When we looked closer, we saw they were towing their honey wagon to the dump station. It had two pretty small wheels and he had fastened it to his rear bumper with what looked like bungee cords. Needless to say, we didn't want to get that close. He was only going about 15 mph and it would seem that he made it.

Is this common practice?

If cross contamination is such a concern, you need to rethink the reason you are using a portable waste tank. They are designed to allow you to dump your on-board waste tank contents and haul it elsewhere for disposal. The entire process has the possibility of not being totally spic & span or Mr. Clean pearly white.

Are you going to totally disinfect it before you hoist it up by your face to store it on the rear ladder or bear wrestle with it to get it under the steps or on the rear bumper?

Put your hazmat suits on and let the bashing begin!

I had a local welder build a rack out of angle iron which is attached to the back bumper. Thousands of miles traveled with no problems.Click image for larger version

Most are designed to be towed...of course not over rough terrain. Mine is labelled with a placard stating "Do not tow over X mph".
