shower drain plug

My shower is draining slowly and I'm pretty sure I have a clog beginning in the P-trap. The drain plug in the shower is the type where you pull up to drain and push down to hold water. It's a little pain in the behind because as you shower if your foot touches it, it closes. A plunger doesn't work real good because as you push down on the plunger you close the drain thereby preventing the plunger from working. I can get a little action on plunging upwards. I don't want to use any chemicals, so the plunger is the way to go.

If I could remove the drain plug, the plunger would easily do the trick, or I could possibly fish the clog out with a wire. Does anyone know how to remove it? By forcibly pulling upward, does it come out?

Thanks in advance.

Don't remember what it was called but I have see a different type of drain in catologs. It was some type of check valve. Might want to look in the belly before using a snake.

I recently removed my drain plug, had to pull really hard to get it out, so hard I was afraid ot would break something. We would like to eliminate plug and just put a screen trap on drain. Anyone done this?

I have pulled out the drain plug on all 3 campers we have owned and just left the open drain. Never had any issues. I too always felt they were in the way!

Being a family of wookies, we did the same- pulled the plug (it's a shower only- I have no idea when or why we would ever want it to hold water). And put down a drain screen for catching hair.

Where did you get the screen? I pulled mine out by mistake and want to leave it out but can't find the screen.

My bet is Home Depot or Lowes. If not there, we'll occasionally end up in Walmart and Bed, Bath and Beyond.
