I have a Chevy Silverado 1500 with Tow Package. Specs in book say:
Max Trailer Weight: 9500
GCWR: 15000
My truck has HD Trailer Equip Package
My trailer is 2012 Rockwood:
GVWR: 8780
Base/Dry 6379
We went on one trip and with the exception of an issue on a very steep hill (which I can avoid) it pulled fine. The issue I have is that I think my truck is undersized and should move up to 2500 or 3500...thoughts?
just cause the book says that, doesn't mean yours does. that amount is based on certain factors.
you need to post the truck's year, engine size, cab size, bed size, rear end ratio.
You really need to weigh the truck by itself, and then the TT and TV combo. Actual weights are what matters. I weigh mine with everything I am going to go camping with. This will be the real test.
If this was your first time pulling a trailer travel you would have felt uncomfortable with ANY truck, so don't worry about that part of it.
Your trailer is about the same specs as mine and although I prefer a 3/4 ton, there are folks that tow the same with half tons.
If your issue on the hill was that you were running at 4000-5000 RPM's don't worry about that either. Sounds like you made it up the hill so what exactly was the issue?
Just a thought, we live in central Florida and bought our 2012 8314bss in July. I had a chevy truck like yours but a few years older. We upgraded to a 2500 just for that reason. Didn't feel the 1500 could take us where we wanted to go. Have only been out 1 time, didn't even know the camper was there most of the time, but it was on relative flat terrain. When loaded we're right about 80 percent of towing capacity, which is where I prefer to be. Hope this helps.
