Depends on what brand water heater you may have in your RV.
If it's a Suburban, you remove the anode rod to drain the tank and that is a 1 & 1/16th

If it's an Atwood/Dometic, you remove the nylon drain plug and it's a 7/8ths or 15/16ths.

Do yourself a favor and buy a 1-1/16,6point socket, and also take a 6" extension that will allow room to use the lever/ratchet you select outside the door area! You will find during "reinstall " the extension acts as a lever to hold the A-Rod level, place a small piece of material or paper across the 1-1/16 socket and push the hex of the A-Rod into the socket, this will keep the A-Rod tight and level for install when needed! Youroo! !

Some people also use a truck lug wrench, that has all of the three aforementioned sizes on it.

Don’t forget to operate the bypass so antifreeze doesn’t go into your hot water tank.

Water Heater Plug
Always remember the teflon tape when re-installing the plug. The threads are coarse and will leak without sealant.

Not if you have a folding lug wrench.

I totally agree with those folks saying to open the pressure relief valve before taking the plug out. I came very close to getting a torpedo in the gut when I forgot to do that!

If you need a really quick way to get sediment out of the tank, skip this step.

That lug wrench is available at most parts houses and even Walmart. Keep mine in the back seat in my truck. Always with me whether towing or not. Never know when you will get a truck flat.

Pressure relief valve, I learned that the hard way. Wasn't hot water at least. Another tip. I cut off a spent anod rod and kept the plug itself for use in an occasional water/vinegar heater cook out like a coffee maker. I drain mine when cooled after each trip and am amazed at the crud that comes out with the water.

If it is an Atwood, be carefull not to twist the head off the nylon plug. Or do what I did and replace the plug with a nylon nipple, npt to hose thread adapter, hose end shut off and cap. Now to empty the tank I just turn the shut off a quater turn and it drains. I also drilled a 1/2 inch hole through the cap and replaced the hose washer with one that has a sreen. If I leave the shut off open for an extended time I do not worry about bugs gettting in. I can also connect a hose to the shut off I we want to do dishes outside.

Draining Attwood Water Heater
I bought my used Class A last January and the day after getting it home the TV weather guesser said the temperature that night would be down in the teens. Knowing I had to make an attempt to drain the water out of the coach to save my plumbing. Much my surprise, I discovered that the water heater had been equipped with a petcock at the drain plug. I'm guessing the previous own installed this but it sure made that part of the drain operation a lot easier.

Petcock makes it easy to drain, but not to clean out.

Instead of opening the pressure relief valve on the heater itself, just go inside and open any hot water faucet, this will also aid in draining your tank. Just remember to close it when your finished.

Don't forget to turn off the AC power to the water heater before draining.
NEVER open the safety valve unless you have a source handy for a new one. Local hardware store may have one. These have a nasty habit to not reseal when manually opened something which is never necessary.
DO depressurize the water system before removing the anode or drain plug. As simple as opening a hot water faucet. Bypass the heater when its empty.
Replace the anode or plug after flushing out the tank. The steel bung in the tank will rust over the winter and the anode may not fit without rethreading the bung.
