What do you tow your 2509s with?
Hello. I have been eyeing the Rockwood 2509s and it looks like it may be perfect for my family of 4. For those of you who have one, I am just curious what you pull it with (including engine, towing capacity, payload capacity, etc.). And feel free to chime in on how much you like the trailer! Thanks.

While I don't have a 2509s, my Vibe 21BH is a very similar Floorplan, 4" shorter, and 55lbs lighter (UVW - dry weight) so a good comparison.
I tow my Vibe with a 2019 F150 Screw, 4x4, 6.5 bed, 3.5 with turbo EB.
F150 has a tow rating of 10,700 # as equipped
Remaining Payload (door sticker) 1810 #
Scaled (packed for travel) Vibe= 6480# (axles = 5540# Tongue weight = 940#)
** The Trailer weights are with Full Fresh water. The FW tank is in front of trailer axles so does add some tongue weight.
The F150 has no problem towing the Vibe, I am very pleased with the combination.

Thank you for all of that detailed information. That gives a good idea of tongue weight and everything. I guess I should figure around 1,000 pounds max tongue weight and my payload is about 1630 so that should work. Would be nice to have that 1810 like yours though

Remember I had my fresh Water tank full and being in front of the trailer axles added tongue weight.
Also in my Vibe I have storage under the part of the lower bunk which could be used to store heavy cargo which would help offset some tongue weight. .
Safe Travels.

We don't have the 2509 but rather a 2015 2504S which is a similar floor plan. Our dry weight is about 4850 lbs and a hitch weight of 700 lbs. We towed it with a 2012 Chevy Avalanche which was a nightmare. Bought a 2020 GMC Sierra SLT with tow package (5.3 L) and it is a breeze now. Payload on the Sierra is 1889 lbs. Lots of power for the hills and the 10 speed transmission is great.
We generally like the 2504S except getting tired of the Murphy bed and the couch that is under it is not very comfortable for sitting. The Murphy bed does give tons of room inside the trailer during the day. We also don't like the small windows. Even on the sunniest of days, you need to turn lights on to see anything. Had only one issue when new (leaking water line in bathroom sink) that I repaired and we have made a few mods.
Have not looked at 2509 up close so not sure if it is brighter inside.
Good luck with your purchase and happy camping!

I do believe you will need a motor vehicle to tow the trailer.

Sorry I don’t know all the particulars, but we tow our MicroLite 25brds (same as 2509s) with a 2019 Chevy Tahoe v8 with towing capacity of 6600 lbs. We love the trailer!

I tow mine with a 2011 Ford Expedition XLT with tow package. I use the Husky hitch. It took me several trips to the scales to get things balanced the way I wanted. All of my measurements are in-spec, except the tongue weight which goes over 900lbs when the fresh tank is full (measured on my tongue scale). We put all our cargo in the rear of the trailer to reduce payload in the tow vehicle.
Towing is actually quite comfortable. I keep to about 60mph on the highway and get 8mpg average on a trip.
At the moment, we don't do trips longer than a week. If I were going to do a trip of several months, I'd get a 3/4 ton.

Good info! So is it just the couch you don't like because it is uncomfortable, or is the bed uncomfortable? I guess I picture it as when you get up, you can just fold up the bed and not even have to make it and it is out of the way. Or you can just leave it down since you will probably be outside most of the time anyways. Is that not the case?

The couch is not that comfortable in our opinion. Trying to figure out options for replacing it or upgrading. Our cats like going under it in the day time to sleep. We use a 2 inch memory foam topper on the bed and it is okay for comfort. We do fold up the bed as soon as we get up in the morning and there is room to do that without removing all the sheets, blankets etc. With our unit it would be inconvenient to leave the bed down all day as it blocks a portion of the door way. There is still room to get in and out but I would be cursing and stubbing toes on the bed so not a good time. Hope this helps.

You can see my tv info in the signature at the bottom of my post. We are well within all the specs for our tv and the 2509s. We typically don't travel with a full fresh tank when we take longer trips. I choose to carry a couple 5 gal. water tanks in the bed of the truck, and we are still under the payload capacity for the truck.
The 2509s is easily towable with a 1/2 ton truck. Get a good wd hitch and load the tt properly and all will be fine. We have travelled to the west coast twice, and to FL last year. We have crossed many high passes, and never had issues. You have the advantage now of getting the 2509s with GY Endurance tires and tpms installed. The GY tires make for a very nice ride. Get an observation camera for the tt too, since its pre-wired. Makes changing lanes and backing easier.
We love the 2509s. Our kids are high school and college age now so they don't travel with us as much. My only recommendation would be to stay away from any tv less than a 1/2 ton truck. I get concerned when I see people towing with mid-size SUVs. It's not a big tt, but will weigh close to 6k pounds when loaded and have a tongue weight close to 700 lbs. Happy camping.

I tow mine with the truck in my signature. Tows great, and all within specs. If I go any larger than a 2509 I will go to a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck.
One thing to be wary of with the 2509 is that it has a very high tongue weight. Mine is just over 800lbs and that's only with full propane, 2 batteries, and some boards for leveling in the passthrough.

I just bought the 2509S's twin, the Flagstaff Micro Lite 25BRDS. Towing with a 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500, crew cab, short bed, LT 4x4, 5.3L V-8 with max trailering package, 3.42 gears and an Andersen sway control WD hitch. Truck has 2039 lb. payload capacity. Literally just bought the trailer 1 week ago and have only towed 175 miles. Averaged 9.3 MPG on relatively flat Louisiana highways.

If your tongue weight is 1000 pounds you have #630 left for WDH, occupants in the TV, plus any other cargo in the TV. That might be cutting it pretty close.

I pull my 2509S with a 3.5L Ecoboost F-150, it does fine. I use an 800 lb. WDH. It's a good camper, no regrets on the purchase.

2509S Tow Vehicle
We tow our 2509S with a Toyota Tundra 4WD with Tow Package (actually they all come standard with that now, including electric brake controller).
Pulls no problem and very stable with a WD hitch with anti-sway (E2 brand).
As we headed out on a recent trip, we went to the scales (only one pad, but hey, it was free ):
Full TV gas tank, TT tanks empty, two batteries, full propane, odds & ends in the truck bed, two adults, two dogs, some beer and fridge full of food:
Truck was 7,120 vs. Max GVW of 7,100
Trailer (minus tongue weight) of 5,200
Total combined weight 12,320 vs. max of 16,000 (as others have noted, this is usually not your constraint)
A tip: If you have any heavy stuff, put it in that back cubby hole under the bunks, and it will "subtract" about 50% from your tongue weight due to the see-saw effect. We are going to do that if we bring more stuff.

Mileage
I forgot to add that on our first longer trip we got a pretty remarkable 11.7 MPG on mostly flat terrain but that did include a climb to 2,000 feet and back to sea level to get over some low mountains.
We were pretty pleased with that since the Tundra has a low axle ratio of 4.30 and this truck is not known for its good gas mileage...

Hello! We bought our 2509s last summer. We tow with a 2012 Silverado Crew Cab, 5.3 with the tow package. I have a 1,000 lbs Recurve R3 wdh. We live in east Tennessee. Truck does fine with three passengers a 25 lb rescue Beagle. Before this, we had a Jayco hybrid 19XUD, 3,900 LBS. It was easier towing that, for sure. I plan on upgrading the truck next year, looking at a new 2021 Silverado RST with the 6.2/10 speed.
I average about 10 mpg, riding at 60-63 mph.
Love the layout of the camper. The hybrid was our first camper, i thought the canvas would be great, and it was as far as comfort. But, it seems to rain on every campout, so i had to set everything up upon arriving home and dry it all out. Plus, two years ago i had to break camp in Charleston as a tropical storm was approaching. That did it for me.

Just ordered a 2509S last week. I'll be towing with a 2021 Ford F150 Powerboost with Max Tow on it.
Upside to the Powerboost: I got the 7.2kWh generator with it. No separate generator needed. It also comes standard with the 3.73 rear axle and a ton of torque in that engine.
Downside to the Powerboost: Lower payload... Using max calculations I'll be right under that payload max.

Ram 1500 Ecodiesel with a ridiculously low payload. Over by _00 lbs but within axle ratings. I got the WDH dialed in with all but 20# back on front axle, Sumo Springs and I sit in the slow lane with cruise at 65.
I'd take my setup over one of those silly 3/4 ton brodozers with rear end squatting and tires sticking way out the side. Get your hitch dialed in, drive like you got some sense and you'll be fine.
