What is “Axle weight”

Ordered a Rockwood Geo Pro 17PR and the specs say axle weight is 2671 but the unloaded vehicle weight is 3161 so I know it’s not the axle weight rating. What does this number mean?
Thanks for any help. This is about the only thing I haven’t been able to find an answer for on this site.

I believe that is how much is on the axle when empty. The rest is tounge weight.

Not that you're wrong but that doesn't add up. They say the unloaded vehicle weight is 3161, the axle weight is 2671 and the hitch weight is 452 that sounds like they are only leaving 38 pounds before the axle is overloaded. That would mean I couldn't even add propane or batteries?
I know I'm missing something here. Maybe that is the actual weight of the axle but I have never heard of them giving that.

Axle weight plus tongue weight equals total weight of unloaded vehicle. This is NOT gross weight.

So it’s not weight rating, what it will carry, but what it actually weighs. That makes sense.
When it comes in it will have a sticker like my truck that will tell gross vehicle weight of that specific unit as its built correct. And the axle and tire rating should be on that also.
I have read where they build them tight on weight rating but that scared me for a minute.

Yes on the sticker with actual "as built" and gvwr. I don't recall actual axle of tongue weight. Not sure.

Most small trailers have a 3,500 lb axles. That is, they have an axle that is rated to carry 3,500 lbs.

If we look at the Rockwood page for your trailer, we see the following weights:
  • UVW = 3,161
  • CCC = 761
  • Hitch Weight = 462
Quick math can help us out here. Unloaded weight plus the maximum carry weight is 3161 + 761 = 3,922 lbs. That would be the GVWR of the trailer. Subtract the hitch weight, because that weight is on the TV and not the trailer axle: 3,922 - 462 = 3,500 lbs. Voila! 99.99999% sure you have a 3,500 lb rated axle in that trailer.

Rockwood assumes an 11.8% hitch weight, for whatever reason, in its calculations.

Now you can take a look at your tires and see what kind of margins you have. For example, my Constancy LY188 ST205/75R14 tires are rated at 1984 lbs in single use (i.e., single axle).

So if you had my tires and you were fully loaded to the GVWR, you would have 3500/2 = 1750 lbs on each tire. So your tires would be loaded to (1750/1984) x 100 = 88.2% (or 11.8% margin). Of course, if you're not fully loaded, the loaded percentage would go down and your margin would go up. And the only way to truly know your actual weights is to load it like you're going camping and then go weigh it.

If you stay on the forum, you'll soon see lots of discussion here about "China bomb" tires (Tires made in China, which is about 95% of them). I haven't weighed my TT, but I've estimated my axle weights based on the spec numbers and what I know I put in it, and I figure my tires are about 68-70% loaded and I haven't had any issues with them in 3 years (knock on wood). I keep them at the max pressure of 50 psig. When you get your GeoPro, you'll have to look at your tires, estimate your own weights (or go weigh it), figure your own margin and decide if you want to replace the China bombs (that I know you will get) with something else.

Thank you all for the help. WHEN it comes in we plan on going on a couple close to home weekend trips but have a big trip planed in August. Will be leaving St. Charles, MO for a family reunion in Alberta Canada then to the Grand Canyon and back. I plan on buying new tires prior to that trip. Probably go with the Maxis. I don't want to take any chances with only 1 axle.
