What screw to use on Azdel walls

Geo Pro and E Pro's have Azdel interior walls with foam behind them. I want to attach paper towel holder to the wall....so a pretty light item. How should I mount them....what type of screw? Because the foam goes all the way to the fiberglass exterior....the expandable screws would expand into the foam, and not behind the foam....so would they work? I don't know if the Azdel itself is thick enought to hold a screw.

My Flagstaff has the foam in the walls so I didn't know what to use either. I mounted my holder to the underside of a cabinet instead. Not sure if that would work for you.

Never had that material. However in spots with no backing I have had success with using short fat screws with Gorilla glue on the bracket of whatever is being attached. This glue swells big time, use sparingly and clean up waste before it dries.

You might want to use Command Strips instead of screws.

X2!

I put up several Command hooks and even attached a clock to one of our walls with the "velcro" type Command Strips like RockfordRoo shows above... That clock is my "test"... I only used 1 strip, and thought that if this holds, they'll all hold.

It hasn't fallen yet! I'm impressed with the Command products.

I'll be screwing in a towel rack and TP holder today, let you know how it goes. I may get toggle screws if the screws that came with it don't work so well.

After having bad luck with those command stick type products, I now use 2-part epoxy on anything I attach to an interior wall. It doesn't take much and I always also use several coarse thread screws. This combination has never failed. Be sure to pre-drill for any screws.

I have used the command strips on my walls of my trailer that has Azdel walls and nothing has moved. I wouldn't do it another way. The TP and PT holders are rock solid and if my wife can't pull the PT holder off when she rips a towel off then I know it works as good a Gorilla glue.

Are you sure the Azdel is interior wall? I thought it was exterior.

Another Command strip user. If nothing else, they cover the failed screw holes.... :-)

Azdel

azdel is interior wall. Covers all my interior, including shower. No plastic liner in shower. I thought this would be a problem, but don't need the plastic liner with Azdel. It replaces Luan which is often used. Exterior is gelcoat.

Gelcoat is a coating which gives paint and other surfaces extra protection. The exterior wall is either fiberglass or a plastic.

Try using zinc Z-mack anchors. I installed a hand rail for my wife using them. Solid as a rock. They look like a tapered screw and install with a drill.
Perfect for our rv walls. Most hardware stores carry them. Dont use the nylon ones.

joindy - I didn't want to screw anything into my Azdel walls on my 19FBS either, so I went with an alternative, which was on of those stand-up paper towel holders. It takes a bit of counter space, but i didn't have to screw into my walls.

Might be an alternative idea to consider...

This is what we used to attach our toilet paper dispenser and towel bars to the bathroom walls. Note, since the wall board material is quite thin compared to drywall, the smaller wall mollies have to be used. Here are some examples of the different sizes available and one picture of how they expand and grip the back side of the wall when completely tightened down. Drill a 1/4 inch drill hole in the wall, insert the molly and tighten, unscrew the screw and mount the item.

We use the industrial white Velcro to hang everything from paper towel holders to clocks.

I've had success using mollies as well...the size for thin walls. Used them for coat rack and towel hooks. I also used the molly setting tool like this one:

The foam core wall and panels I use Hillman #10-24 x 5/8-in Rubber Standard (SAE) Well Nut (Lowes/Home Depot) in lieu of any anchor bolts. I bore a hole just deep enough to install. As you tighten the machine screw. The rubber swells in the foam and pulls you attaching item uptight.the rubber seals the exposed surface (water proof installation)
