Stock mattress and a pad...or just toss it?

Will be taking delivery of my 267RBSS soon for the spring season. What say you about the stock mattress? Try to salvage it with a pad or did you toss it out? If so what did you replace it with?

I have owned Forest River and Keystone products. In each the mattresses sucked. In the Forest River we tried a topper. Didn't help. We replaced it after the first year. In the Keystone, we slept on the OEM mattress the first trip. Before the second trip we bought a new full sized hybrid innerspring mattress and have been happy with it thru four trips so far.

I traveled in a rental Jayco once. Mattress did not deserve that name. I have a friend with a Grand Design Reflection. He said they tossed the OEM mattress after several trips. It seems (from what I can determine) that all OEM mattresses stink. IMO, throwing good money (for a topper) at a bad mattress is a waste of time.

You will get mixed responses to this. Many are comfortable with adding a pad and find that comfortable. Others of us gave up on trying to find a comfortabe pad and replaced the entire mattress. We only sleep in our trailer 20-30 nights a year and replaced our OEM mattress with a very comfortable inexpensive new mattress.

It took me one or two nights to get a decent mattress on order.
Lots of RV mattress sites.
Mine is a camp-queen and I think it weighs around 70lbs. Keep the extra weight in mind if you replace it.
Extra height too. I have a fold up step stool at the foot of my bed now.

We lasted about 2 years with the original mattress and a 2" foam topper before deciding that my back couldn't deal with it anymore. Bought a foam mattress and have never looked back.

This is one of those subjects where there's no one answer as each person (even husband and wife) have differing opinions on what is best for them to sleep on.

With that said, the consensus on every R/V forum I visit says the OEM mattress that comes in an R/V, is simply not up to the task and needs replaced. Most folks say a topper made it better but down the road, they too were just not enough. A topper on an already good mattress is another story and we have used one (after replacing the mattress) for many years.

Mattresses in a box seem to be a popular choice. We recently purchased one for a relative's R/V (as a gift with their input) and they love it. We have one in our guest bedroom in the sticks & bricks and it is comfy.

What YOU replace YOUR mattress with is a personal choice.

Get a mattress that's close to the one you have at home.
Our friends sleep on a 'Sleep Number' at home, purchased one for their new rv and finally got a good night's sleep.

I knew the RV mattress would be lame. That's why I only considered buying one with a standard residential queen rather than the special RV size
