Sorry about your bad luck! Who is the awning manufacturer?

Sure looks as if either there was a wind storm/micro burst that you were unaware of or water pooling due to being deployed too horizontally.

That’s more like an insurance claim than it is a warranty claim.

Definetly insurance not warrantee, now you have learned the 'do not leave awning out at night or anytime unattended' lesson

Well you have to admit that catastrophic failure like that, one year old, is not only unlikely but not logical unless some other forces were at work. But you may be the one in ten thousand. Like others have said good luck!

You are right but....there is more reading on this than you care to read.
Here is a pic of mine with awning brackets, poles and claw tie downs...I still don’t leave it unattended

If you leave it out overnight or unattended you will just be replacing the next one when it happens again. Those hydraulic arms are supposed to have an auto dump feature for rain but I don't often trust them. Theoretically the hydraulic arm collapses and lets the water off and then pushes back up.

Sorry for being slow but what do you mean by “it was not vertical”? When is an awning vertical?

Awning
Hello, how does the end of the roller mounting area look that broke off? It almost looks like that's what failed. Is there sheared off screw heads? Just wondering...

You need to have one side angled down, by having the whole awning angled down it can still pool, these type of awning's are not the same as the manual one, sorry but it sounds like this one is on you.

I don't leave mine extended while unattended either. It's the only way I know how to prevent such an occurrence. A few years ago I was camping in a small campground with about 70 sites. Beautiful July day. We packed up to run into town for about 20-25 minutes. Just to the fishing tackle store to get some live bait.
By the time we came back 25 minutes later, a storm had come thru and made a mockery of every unattended awning in the place from ones attached to campers being thrown over the tops of the campers onto roofs, easy up canopies in a twisted pile, screen tents shredded and rolled across the campground. by the next morning, the dumpster was full and there was a pile of twisted aluminum easy up legs and their roof structures there that would have been too much to fit in a pickup bed.
Half the people I heard stories from were on a hike on the grounds or at the pool and it happened so fast, they couldn't save their stuff. I was probably one of about 20-25 people that had awnings the rest of the week. There were a bunch of new easy up's purchased that week too because it was in the high 90's the rest of the week.
I much prefer to learn from others mistakes than my own. It hurts less.

x2!
we NEVER leave our awning out, unless we're under it. if we leave or go to bed, the awning comes in.
there are literally thousands of threads about those who lose the awning while they're gone or in bed, from a sudden gust of wind.
consider yourself lucky to have gotten away with it before.

Have not had the auto dump feature of my A&E Dometic awning fail. I think the Carefree awnings mechanism is not as robust as the A&E and not engineered correctly. Wind however is detrimental to all awnings.

They work great for shade. Keeping stuff dry is iffy, depending on how much rain or wind there is.
We don't keep anything under ours that can't stand a little rain water and always bring it in when we go to bed at night. Takes all of 10 seconds and it's one less thing to worry about.

Posturing a thought.
Seems like the newer power awning systems are more fragile and prone to self combustion than older manual style awnings with arms that extend at 45 degrees to the lower point on the trailer.
Believe the older style offers greater rigidity in the design as to how forces are distributed. (Think bridge truss design at near 45 degree angles)
