Because I keep reading forum articles about the water tank falling off when someone's on a road trip with a full tank.

If I am heading for a park W/O water hookups, I take along a couple five gallon
water cans dedicated for just potable water. For coffee, i haul store bought 1 gallon jugs. Most all Michigan state parks do not have water hookups and no threaded connectors on the hydrants.

my question: Do you normally drive in with water in your fresh water tank or can/do you hook up at the ‘local spigot’ in the loop at the park and fill your tank when you get there? I don’t know what is allowed and what may be considered very wrong. Water adds a lot of weight when traveling, particularly in the mountains.

Thanks for your help.
Probably depends what state you are in,,, and the quality of your water @ home !!! I always fill our Sunseeker @ home with soft water and Tastepure,,,
Moist if not all Michigan State Parks have drinkability water @ the Dump Station !!!

My only experience camping in NY was at Watking Glenn. Waited till I got there to fill water tank. Got 40 gal of sulfur water. Took a long time to flush the stink out of the system. 🤬

Rotten eggs aren't the only thing that smells like sulfur. Pickled Eggs can bring on that smell too.

Unless you have a marginal tow vehicle, water weight makes very little impact on fuel mileage.

So we're very experienced dry campers. We have a 6 gallon water jug to shuttle fresh water, a blue tote tank for gray water, two batteries, an inverter for tv and charging devices and a Honda 2000i inverter generator.
I grew up in Pittsburgh PA. We have some of the steepest hills in the world. It's part of the Appalachian Mountain range, which you may not be aware of. Lol

Hmm, when we took a trip out to Hersey earlier this month, according to the truck, the worse I got on the tollway was a 3-4% grade. I did see a 6% once, but that was after I had dropped the fiver at the Pittsburgh South KOA, and was on some tight back country roads I would never have been on normally following the GPS to the closest gas station (a little mom and pop place that was still full service).

Look up Canton Ave. At 37 percent grade it's the steepest in the world. It's just not long, not likely a place you'd tow ANYTHING up, let alone a RV. But I like to spread the word about my hometowns hilly attributes. However the Western PA area has many long and steep roads that RVs would need to climb to get to some nice parks. Seven Springs is one that immediately comes to mind.

Sounds like it's a good thing the GPS never took me though the actual city then.

I always travel with full fresh water and empty or near empty waste tanks.

One time I had a tow vehicle issue and pulled in to a service business just before closing time.

They said sure. We can get you on the road, but not untill tomorrow morning.

They also said I could park overnight in their fenced and patrolled storage lot, since there were NO campgrounds near by.

We pulled in, unhooked, gave them the tow vehicle, and set up the trailer for the evening.

I had full fresh water tanks and empty waste tanks, so NO problem.

Next morning at 9:00 our tow vehicle was repaired. We hooked up and off we went.

If my fresh water tank had been empty, my wife and family would have been a little stressed.

I now have a Lance 1575 (small single-axle) and a Georgetown 31L5 (35 ft. Class A).

I always travel with full fresh water and empty waste tanks. You just never know.
