2016 Ford V10 Oil Change Caution

I cannot be bothered crawling under our unit to change the oil and filter. By doing ones self you have to dispose of the filter and oil and that is a bit of a pain. We get our oil changed for 102.97 plus tax but there is a lot more to it than that. They check tire pressure and rotate the ties if needed, check the alignment Check the brakes.check the battery, rad coolant, Wiper blades , brake fluid, transmission fluid, wiper blades, and drive belts and give us a condition report of the unit as a whole.
A standard oil change on my 2010 F-150 is $82.41. Plus if anything is screwed up , filter leaking etc. they will stand behind their work. Brandon2

Just checked my last Ford dealer service invoice and it was $44.40 including $4.00 tax. Thats for oil and filter, topping off all fluids, tires, etc. Tread wear was normal on all, so no need to rotate. I don't see how I could have done it much cheaper, even going to wally world. Of course, that was for 5W20 which they put in by mistake and subsequently replaced at no charge with the correct 5W30.

Other than I haven't found the filler cap yet (maybe because I hadn't looked for it) I found the Ford owners manual for my rig and saw the required oil viscosity is 5w20. Sometime before my trip to the Grand Canyon in Sept, I'll be doing the oil and filter change.

Since it was two different dealers, there may be a good reason. What did the dealers say, or did you get a cance too ask them?

Both had personnel that simply didn't make note of the change required for the 2016 6-speed chassis. They were both so used to the prior year models requirement for 5W20 that it was literally "news" to both of them. Neither made any fuss about having to do the job over again, but I'm sure they won't let it happen again. My prior 2007 Coachman required 5W20 and a friend's 2016 (2015 chassis w 5-speed) required 5W20. All had the same V10. Anyway, it looks like everything after my VIN requires 5W30 and the only difference between them is the 6-speed transmission. Or so it seems to me. Ford must have a good reason for suddenly changing after so many years.

Just a little follow up: the oil change requirement for my 2016 with the 5W30 is now 7500 miles whereas my prior 2007 with 5W20 was 5000 miles. So, depending upon how many miles you put on every year, that could translate to reduced maintenance and cost.

The 2016 Ford Owners Manual CAPACITIES AND SPECIFICATIONS - 6.8L lists both 5W20 and 5W30 as recommended on Pages 202 and Page 203. But off to the side of the Specification Part Number is a little superscript 1 that is defined on Page 205.

"1 Reference the reservoir cap for proper fluid."

So the oil weight listed on the oil reservoir cap is correct for your vehicle. Weird that Ford would do it that way but that is what the book says...

You have a different owner's manual than mine. In mine, the oil requirement is on page 201 and there is no mention of engine oil on page 202 or 203.

Thanks, RedLdr1. That helps explain away most of the differences. I know that both dealers checked my VIN to make certain I was correct before they went to the expense of changing the oil and filter after they installed the lighter weight oil.

It all goes back to what one of the members said about checking the yellow writing on the filler cap.

Also, it looks like oil spec doesn't have any effect on the mileage change requirement since both would fit the 7500 mile parameter.

OK, suppose your specified oil was 5W20 and you used 5W30. What happens?

Other than the warnings in the operator's manual about not being covered by warranty, reduced performance, reduced fuel economy, I don't know. Perhaps an automotive engineer can explain it.

Ford in the last 20+ years has been picky on oil. I remember the 4.6L came out and had oil problems linked to use of wrong spec of oil. I honestly don't think your engine would ever know the difference. Change oil specs to a lesser rated oil...stand back and wait for stuff to mess up.

Georgetown 270S to check and add oil, there is no room when the hood is raised

Consider this, mobile 1 enhanced performance oil is rated for 15,000 miles between oil changes. Like i said earlier, a 5qt jug of any viscosity costs around $25 and qts are $8 something each. For my 7 qt oil change it's $41 for the oil and $8 something for the mobile 1 filter which is only a little more than i paid for an oil change on my ford expedition for 7500 mile change interval. So you get twice the mileage for just a little more cost. It's cost effective to go with the full synthetic oil. Do the math yourself!!!

If your tires are wearing funny, go to a tire dealer. Check and replenish fluids yourself! If brakes are squealing go to a repair shop. No excuse for not doing your own maintenance.

5-20 vs 5 - 30 Interestingly the specs have changed for the 2016 -17. My v-10 2013 in a 2014 Sun Seeker specifically calls for 5 - 20 in the owners manual and on the oil filler cap.
I have no ide why ford has changed the viscosity of the oil. Maybe an engineer could not even answer that question. I do know though that most new engines are going to lighter oil viscosity.

We have a 2003 F-150 - 2011 EDGE & a 2013 V10,,, they all call for 5 W 20 !!!
