2021 Camping Plans

Well, we all know 2020 was a tough year with everything being Covid related. My wife and I feel lucky we still got in forty-five nights camping this year. Unfortunately, though our grand cross country trip visiting Yellowstone, Napa, Yosemite, and other western locations did get canceled though. That trip was to be our "retirement" break out trip. But, we still had fun enjoying the places we were able to visit.

My question is, "What is in the works for your 2021 camping plans?" Who's planning trips, yeah, the vaccine is on the way. Those that are going ahead with plans are they just an outline of where etc., or actual campground bookings, research and route selection and the works?

Yesterday I checked on state park campsite availability for the month of June in Wisconsin. Most of the parks are sold out for the summer. Unless you have plans made, you may have a difficult time getting reservations.

We are currently on our winter trip. We have reservations all the way to Jul 21 (36 campgrounds). Most of these were made last year during our normal winter trip (Nov - May). But 2021 is a Family Reunion year so we will go out to Oregon and return home in Sep 21. We still have to make our reservations for the way home (Jul - Sep 21).
We have done nothing different than we normally do, however we do follow the guidelines for this Covid-19 stuff. We still say Hi to our fellow campers, but usually don't sit with them and chat as we used to.
Hopefully this will all be over in the near future and we can get back to some sort of normality.

So far my DW and I are planning a trip to Nashville in June to be followed by a few days exploring the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. We were hoping to do a southern trip in late February early March spending a week or so in Raleigh, a few days in Charlotte, and then eventually work our way down to Key West. However, with all the drama that has played out with the election and "the sky is falling Covid" we have not made one booking yet and I am not sure we will be able to secure campgrounds throughout the Keys. This weekend we'll make a definitive decision to maybe scale that trip back to the Carolina's and whatever else that comes to mind.

We have 6 Sun thru Friday trips planned in WI state parks next summer. Hoping our Gov won't shut them down like he did for a time last summer.

Now that we’re both retired we found Sunday to Friday to be the sweet spot. Most campgrounds had sites if we avoided the weekends and we also avoided the heavy traffic.

We were fortunate enough to get 52 nights camping in from May-October. Most of our camping was close to home in south central PA. We also camped in Chincoteague VA and the Outer Banks NC. We’re headed to Padre Island TX for the last 2 weeks of 2020.

For 2021 we are camping all of January in the FL Keys. We also have reservations in Chincoteague VA and Cape Henelopen DE for two weeks in May.

We are planning on taking off January 3rd for a southern trip to Florida, then going west after a few weeks. No schedule, only reservations at this point are getting us down to The Naples area and the stay there.
After that it’s, it’s all up in the air.

Planning a two week trip through Wyoming, Utah and Idaho. Have three local trips booked in state with more to come as booking windows allow reservations later in the summer.
Oh yea, first camping trip in April in Oklahoma, got campgrounds booked every other week starting in May. Yup, making up for lost time.

Out here in California they just closed all State Parks and County campgrounds because of the rise in Covid cases. So it looks like we are going to have another rough camping season. So much for my reservations that I worked so hard to get. They are saying that if the numbers go down they will open back up.

We managed to get in 5 trips this year, 4 nights each, once VA state parks re-opened in June. Our previous April reservations were cancelled and our money refunded right after we bought the TT, so it had to sit for the first 3 months. Our trips ranged from 1 to 4 hours one-way.
I just officially retired this month. We are planning to travel cross country next year, with plenty of time to do it. No dates, no reservations yet. Still exploring routes and destinations. Planning to use a mix of free dispersed camping and campgrounds.
First trip of the spring is already booked for the southern coast of Georgia March 1st, with a stop in a SC National Forest on the return trip.
Hope it's not sleet and freezing rain at the end of February when we'll be preparing to hit the road!
So, we have big plans for 2021!

Plans?

Plans? We wish! making plans right now has been like trying to catch a falling knife

Our plans went from extremely specific in 2019 such as, "We must be in this location by this time in order to then be in another location at another booked time." to, "it might be nice to do this trip around that time, and maybe we'll look into that other trip around that other time, but let's not commit to anything let's se how this plays out, but keep the RV ready for any civil unrest/plagues or pestilence."

We have a cabin at Palmer Gulch KOA in South Dakota already booked for June. Had it for this year, but cancelled and they let us keep the reservation for 2021

I have to admit buying our cabin and 53 acres in MO. in 2018 was the BEST investment we ever made. Sold the Cherokee this June and pretty much spent every weekend at the cabin this year. No covid issues, no shut downs, no reservations.

This sounds really great...I would love to have a set up like that...maybe some day.

We have six planned also but from Thursday through Sunday. Praying that Wisconsin doesn't shut down too. We typically go to the state parks.

We have a couple get togethers with other Berk owners waiting to see what happens with frog rallies. Meeting friends in sep in DE. Always spend vets day weekend in Gettysburg. As long as the campgrounds are open and no restrictions entering or leaving states, we are planning to hit the road.

We have 5 trips booked for 2021 spread over 40 nights, all prime waterfront ranging from 6/24 to 9/12. We'll try to add some more outside of those dates depending how things look.
When our kids were young we tent camped, but with demands of my job it was tough to get out more than 2 weeks a year even with 4 weeks vacation. What we did was invest in an in ground pool and landscaping so I could go out my back door after work and pretend I was on vacation. This was 32 years ago and now the grandkids are always over so 30-40 days away with the RV are just about right.
