We had a 2010 Mariner that we towed. Owner's manual said it could be flat towed. After 2 years and a burned up transmission Ford changed their mind and said it could no longer be towed. It didn't matter because we were going to a fifth wheel but it goes to show you can't always trust the owners manual OR the Manufacturer.
If the manufacturer put it in writing then they should be liable for any consequences for just following their written advice.
If buying new you will often get a notice from the manufacturer that there is an important change. If buying used it's a good idea to research the TSB's for the make, model, year and see if there are any listing changes in drivetrain's or new limitations.
One Manufacturer even sent me a new Door Sticker because they changed the tire inflation pressures. This was for a vehicle that had changed hands several times, not a new purchase.
