Help identify this please.....
Opened up my water heater panel to drain/winterize and this fell out when  the door swung down... anybody know what it is ... if/where it goes?

Looks like a red plastic I have no bloody idea what it is thingamajig.
(yes that IS a technical word)....... 
Seriously it looks like a protector for a pipe end or a sleeve.

Yes it's red and plastic alright!
Looks like a sleeve or grommet, yes.
Just not sure it ever belonged in there. Perhaps left over from dealer prep?? My RV is new and this is only my second time opening that panel - never noticed that piece anywhere the first time ... that's why I'm confused a bit here.

Seems to me I had one of those when I opened the panel on my Sunseeker. I couldn't figure out what it was or where it belonged - I believe I tossed it.

I think it's a thread protector that they didn't properly dispose of. I don't think you need it.

Yeah, agree with thread protector. Either male or female. Could be for a pipe, valve or fitting. It could also be for the tank where a pipe, valve or fitting goes into.
Either way, it is just trash left behind... assuming our guesses are correct! [emoji846]

The red plastic piece is indeed a thread protector. It inserts into the brass high-pressure relief valve. Since it is a straight thru design you can leave it in to protect the threads or remove it. These brass pressure relief valves on RV water heaters are prone over time to develop drips (leaks). Leaving the plastic insert in the valve protects the threads from becoming clogged with calcium deposits. Choice is yours to put in or leave out.

It appears to be a sleeve for the HTP relief valve. Try and fir it into the drain opening.

As others have stated, it goes in your temp/pressure relief valve.
Here is a pic of it installed on an Atwood water heater, which I can read you have on the access panel door from the pic in your OP:

I have that same water heater, that is like a rubber foam seal around the pressure valve and the tank plug.
It is 1/4" or a little more thick and soft to the touch.

Is the water heater working? Toss it in the "miscellaneous parts and pieces" box. You may be able to use it for something at some point.

I'm guessing it's part of an assembly used to terminate electric wire @ a devise. Likely installer had extras and dropped the one you found.
See picture.

Look up above your post to post #14 (post numbers are on the right side of the page in most applications). In the post is a pic showing the subject red thread protector stuck in the outlet of the water heater's pressure valve.
