Honda CRV Flat Tow Question.

We flat tow a 2014 Honda CRV and the manual says to replace transmission fluid every 2 years or 30 thousand miles which ever comes first. We only tow a couple times a year and the most miles we tow round trip so far is about 800 miles. Twice a year. For you CVR owners are you changing your tranny fluids?

Have you read your owners manual, I don't think CRVs after around 2005 are recommended to flat tow..

Mine is due next oil change, dealer said to do it and will be $450 for all service. It's been 3 years.

We towed a 2012 CRV for many miles. Owner manual told us what to do. Every thing was fine.

Cr-v towing

We tow a 2008 CR-V and change the oil every 2 years. Except now, it was recalled for airbags. Has been setting at the dealer since early Mar.

I personally go by mileage. If years were the overriding factor, the RV would get changed way more often and nobody would be happy. If you don't have 30K, I'd wait...my two cents. And your towing sounds to be the least of your worries...towed our 2012 CR-V AWD across the country twice last year...no issues. I do start it up and run it thru the gears half way through the driving day if we're making a long pull.

My 09 Element (same drivetrain as a CRV)tranny fluid change was just like an oil change without the filter. Pull the plug, drain and fill. I paid the Honda dealer 84.95 because I thought the pan had to be dropped and filter changed. Self help next time, but it does have to be done periodically.

Regarding towing Honda CRV 2014

We bought a new Honda CRV in 2014. We chose the front wheel (2-wheel drive) option. Honda said the 2-wheel drive option can be towed (all four wheels on the ground). The 4-wheel option cannot be towed.

Effective with the Honda CRV 2015 model, neither the two-wheel nor 4-wheel drive option cars can be towed. We talked with Honda maintenance about this. Apparently, the drive system was changed. This make 4-wheels on the ground towing no longer possible. If you're thinking about a 2015 or 2016 model, I suggest that you talk with Honda maintenance about this issue.

For previous Honda cars that we owned, maintenance would put a sticker on the front windshield indicating mileage total when normal servicing would be due. Maintenance has not done this for the CRV 2014 model since "mileage" is not the measure for indicating service due.

Beginning with the CRV 2014 model, you can click the "button" on the dashboard to see the "% of oil" remaining. Maintenance recommends having periodic service done when the "% of oil" indicator reaches about 15%. This is the point at which Honda recommends periodic maintenance be done.

I talked with Honda maintenance at Honda of the Desert (Palm Springs, CA.) about towing the car and when transmission fluid should be changed. Honda of the Desert has an outstanding maintenance department.

The "rule of thumb" is to change transmission fluid about every 30,000 miles. Alternatively, when monitoring the dashboard, when the "% of oil" indicator drops to about 15%, maintenance said that a light will display on the dash board screen indicating a code number. If the code number is "3," this indicates that the transmission fluid needs to be changed.

We are very careful when we tow our CRV 2014 car. We follow Honda's requirements for setting the car up for towing. So far, everything was worked beautifully.

I hope this information helps you. If you have any specific questions, please contact your Honda maintenance department.

Best wishes,

Rick Lillie

I tow my 2014 CR-V AWD all 4 on the ground with no issue. This was chosen in discussion with the Honda rep. So far so good. I pulled it for 15,000 km last winter while touring the Southern States. Follow the instructions for the start of the day and all should be right. If you go for very long distance make sure to remove the fuse as recommended as this can drain your battery.

We tow a 2014 AWD Honda CRV flat down on all four. We just got the tranny fluid changed last month at our local Honda dealer for $79. Cheap insurance and follows warranty recommendations. They aren't towable flat down anymore, I'd do what the manufacturer recommends.

Our 2012 is flat towable but I am very careful to run the transmission through the gears and allow the oil to circulate in neutral for 3 minutes per the manual. I do it virtually every time I stop for gas our lunch. We are not yet up to 30k miles but will consider having the transmission fluid replace, or checked if they can do it, at that point.

We had one of those switches installed that turns that fuse off to keep from having to remove it. Of course with that fuse off the cigarette lighter plugs don't work. DH ran a cigarette plug from the battery so that we can plug our braking system in.
