We bought a new Honda CRV in 2014. We chose the front wheel (2-wheel drive) option. Honda said the 2-wheel drive option can be towed (all four wheels on the ground). The 4-wheel option cannot be towed.
Effective with the Honda CRV 2015 model, neither the two-wheel nor 4-wheel drive option cars can be towed. We talked with Honda maintenance about this. Apparently, the drive system was changed. This make 4-wheels on the ground towing no longer possible. If you're thinking about a 2015 or 2016 model, I suggest that you talk with Honda maintenance about this issue.
For previous Honda cars that we owned, maintenance would put a sticker on the front windshield indicating mileage total when normal servicing would be due. Maintenance has not done this for the CRV 2014 model since "mileage" is not the measure for indicating service due.
Beginning with the CRV 2014 model, you can click the "button" on the dashboard to see the "% of oil" remaining. Maintenance recommends having periodic service done when the "% of oil" indicator reaches about 15%. This is the point at which Honda recommends periodic maintenance be done.
I talked with Honda maintenance at Honda of the Desert (Palm Springs, CA.) about towing the car and when transmission fluid should be changed. Honda of the Desert has an outstanding maintenance department.
The "rule of thumb" is to change transmission fluid about every 30,000 miles. Alternatively, when monitoring the dashboard, when the "% of oil" indicator drops to about 15%, maintenance said that a light will display on the dash board screen indicating a code number. If the code number is "3," this indicates that the transmission fluid needs to be changed.
We are very careful when we tow our CRV 2014 car. We follow Honda's requirements for setting the car up for towing. So far, everything was worked beautifully.
