Depends on your service provider. I have a DISH Traveler. Works great. Park, press a button and you are good to go, as it finds it's own signal. Hits on all the satellites at the same time, can watch three different shows on different televisions at same time. 3 years and no issues. Bad news is it's pricey. Park under trees or near a building that prevents a clear line of site and you are DOA. I think most people use a Tailgater. While a bit more cumbersome, and you have to set it up each time you move, you can place it anywhere to make sure you get a good signal.

You can mount the Tailgater on the roof and even use a roof mount that allows it to be easily removed.

If you plan on staying at RV parks and resorts with no trees, a roof mounted dish is fine, but if you plan on staying anywhere the might have trees or other line-of-sight obstructions you should get a portable dish of your choice.

What setup is there with a Tailgater? You get it out of the trailer, set it wherever there is clear path to the South and hook the coax up to it. You are done. If you want to get fancy you can use a phone app to find the position of the Dish satellites.

Our Tailgater is six years old and we love it. We can always get a signal by being able to move it away from obstructions.

If I was to get one now, I would purchase the new two output Tailgater by King with the lower profile.

Dish is the only way to go for using a portable dish. Direct can't receive HD on their portables and will rarely change your local channels w/o a hassle. We travel with friends who have Direct. They are usually over with us watching sporting events on local Dish channels

The Tailgater is a whole lot simpler to setup than my manual process with a tripod and regular dish! Unfortunately, with my Canadian satellite provider, Bell TV, you can't use the KING Tailgater. You have to buy the KING Quest for Bell TV or the Winegard Carryout that both cost an extra US$270 and might not work with my receivers. Just not worth the extra cost for all we use the dish.

Maybe I misunderstand you, but I have Direct, and I have a portable dish, and I have HD on every channel that broadcasts it. Mine is not automatic, maybe that's what you meant. But it's close.......takes maybe 2 minutes to set up and get a signal.

The trick is to stay with what you have at home, if possible.

I'm not pushing either one. Just saying that HD is very possible with portable dish with Direct.

Rv satellite

I use the vuqube flex with my directv receiver brought from home.Already had directv at home, but if I had a choice I would definitely have dishtv for the rv. I should probably just switch to dish at home and then I could use that in the rv. Like others have said dish hd locals > direct sd

correct, no DirectTV portable 'automatic' antennas receive HD channels, only DISH's portable antennas do.

Ah... You are correct. I should of said portable automatic dish! I'm way too lazy to spend time setting up a manual dish

And to clarify my previous post, the vuqube is compatible with dish or directv.

So far everybody is telling how much they love their system.
Sat service comes down to two providers. Basic cost is pretty much equal. So is equipment cost.
The big dilgfference is
Dish offers pay as you go and can get HD programing using one of the portable domes.
Directv needs an open faced dish to receive HD programing. Direct has better sports packaging if that intrests you.
Roof mounted automatic open dishes are nice, but expensive, quite fragile, and will not get a signal if blocked by trees. Better option with Direct is a tripod mounted ground system.

3 minutes spent to not have to have an Indian tv company.

Very easy. And actually takes up less space than the Pathway X2 we had back when we had DISH.

Again, it's not a Chevy/Ford/Ram debate. Either is fine. But it's not much different really.

And yes, Direct DOES have an Automatic Portable HD Dish. I'm looking out the window at dozens of them, on roofs of RV's.

By the way, I wasn't trying to say "Mine is better". Both have pluses and minuses. I just wanted folks that don't know, to have correct info.

The ones you are describing, the RV is portable, the dish is fixed on the roof

And I always hear folks say it only takes mere minutes to aim a manual dish, but I've never seen it demonstrated in real life. I do enjoy watching folks take hours aiming them, while I am watching my TV. And then they repeat the next day.

Next thing that I see possibly improperly stated.

I don't call anyone to get local channels. I get local channels with my remote. I use the tv remote, the one that came with it.......and I go to "Source" and select "TV". I don't change any cabling, nothing physical. I put down the DirecTV remote and use the tv remote to watch many channels. Right now, I have over 38 to watch. It's how I will watch the Super Bowl Sunday. Clear, HD, signals. No problem, no calls, no switching, nothing. Voila.
