Travel trailer to motorhome

I have purchased our first travel trailer earlier in the year. My wife and I love the weekend camping. We love it so much we are wanting to get a class A motorhome and spend more time hitting the state parks and national parks. The question I want to ask is how long from when you first got onto camping did you get a motorhome like a class A or C? We have only been at this about 7 months and have caught the camping bug bad.

Do you have a car you can tow around with you, often referred to as a TOAD?

We're on our second year with our TT and even if we do upgrade, it will be to a large 5th wheel.

We started with a class A. So I guess just when ever you want. Look around at several or you will be trading again soon.

I took the wife and kids tent camping a few years ago and it rained and was pretty bad weather wise all weekend. So we bought a 2016 Class C Forester, we skipped the travel trailer step.

We are looking to go from the motorhome to a travel trailer now since we don't really have time right now to travel like we thought we would, we only do short trips around home.

I got back into camping in the summer of 2011 with a TT, 9 months later (2012) bought a 5er and 3 yrs later (2015) bought a Georgetown. We'll probably hang onto this another couple years and then move to a DP. I do find that it's easier for us to just pack up and go a longer distance for a short amount of time, just because of the ride comforts.

I don't think the wife, 3 kids, and I would fit in his Rockwood. We barely fit in the 32 foot RV we have now.

We have been at it for around 20 years. We started with TT (two of them for the first 10 years) then a 34' Class A for almost 10 years. We just upgraded to a 42' 5th wheel. I would keep what you have for a while and make a list of what you like and don't like.

It's all about the adventure.

There's no rule that says you need to spend X amount of time in a certain unit before you can move to a different unit.

They all have their advantages and disadvantages.

Find what you like and get out and enjoy!
If you find it's not what you like/need but you enjoy the lifestyle... get something else.

Tents from the early 70's. A pop up for a couple of years in the early 80's. Back to tents until late 90's pop-up until mid 00's, had a fifth wheel and a couple of TT's at the same time. Switched to a Class C about a year ago and love it. FWIW we bought a small TT after selling off two project Airstreams. Planning to keep it for 3-5 years, traded it less than a year later for the Concord we have now.

You also will not get anything for trade in. You would need to sell it out right. As mentioned take your time and write down advantage and disadvantages of each and what options you would like. I would maybe consider renting a MH and see what ya think. Good luck. Later RJD

If your goal is to hit state and national parks, do consider the length of the motor home and use of a toad. You may find yourself using campgrounds outside these parks if they can't accommodate a large MH. I would research what limitations there are for the camping you are most interested in doing and then find the best unit to fit those needs.
We have taken a popup and now a trailer all over this country. Would a MH be more comfortable, probably...we are in no position to afford a MH that costs more than my stick built home but we certainly don't let that stop us from hitching up the bumper pull, piling into the SUV and hitting the road.

We jumped in headlong into the deep end with a dynamax super C. If you're going to use it regularly you'll get your money's worth IMO.

Definitely watch the length if you're planning to do a lot of State parks. We're damn near 40' and the spots we fit into in State parks are limited. It's doable, just got to do a lot of reasearch. Shorter would certainly be easier.

Also, don't exclude the C's and Super C's that Dynamax (on this forum) is making. Awesome coaches.

Well we went from a PUP (Pop Up Camper) to a Travel Trailer to a 5th Wheel to a Motorhome - took us about 22years LOL!

Still, it does not have to take you THAT Long!!

28’ TT-40’ fifth - 32’ class C. All within 3 years.

Motorhome was the best decision ever.

Although we would never have a Motorhome, the only big negative I can see, is the financial hit you're going to take.

Then there's needing a toad and that you'll have to go no bigger than 30' if you want to camp in national and state park campgrounds.

We just moved from a 29' Itasca Class C to a 2017 280RKS Sonoma and big Tundra to pull it. Our reasoning went like this: in 2015 we visited Yellowstone NP and had to rent a car because the roads are too narrow to accommodate a MH for a quick pull off and even harder to get parking at a visitor center. This way we can drop the trailer and ride around in the truck without worrying about the dog damaging a rental. We also needed a slide so the dog would have some space. Other places like Zion NP and Yosemite's Tioga pass and the Grand Tetons are not MH friendly. The layout in our new unit fits our needs rather precisely.

A motorhome, by itself, requires that you unhook every morning and hook up every evening. Not good. So you need to tow a car which means that you have to have a car that can be towed and the motorhome has to be rated to pull that weight.

Think it through carefully. We spent about 4 years discovering that we really do like to RV and then figuring out what we needed.

Started in 1968 with a tent. Then a Pop Up, five TT and in 2016 a motorhome. So it was 48 years for me.
