Rockwood Roo 21BD seating options

We are trying to decide between the Roo 21BD and 21SS. Our concern with the 21BD is the seating options. With no couch, can you sit comfortably on or around the dinette when you are inside watching TV or reading?

We have a 21DK, for which the layout is similar. It's not great, in that respect, but we rarely watch TV so we're okay with it. We typically use the table for cards and board games. We lounge on the beds for reading.

Less conveniently, you can drop the table to make a bed and lounge on that to watch TV.

The 21BD was not available when we were shopping. Had it been an option we may have preferred it over the DK due to the outside storage space. If you can secure it, the deck is a great place for a generator and firewood.

When we were shopping for our hybrid, one bullet point was that it had to have a sofa and dinette. We many times camp with grandkids, and the inevitable rainy day would be problematic without enough seating.

The 21ss was my choice in our search. However, the minute my wife saw the 23ikss, it was HER choice. You probably know how this story ends.

Very few dinettes in any TT are comfortable for long term seating, although kids probably don't have as much of an issue with it than adults. They're all basically a chunk of 4-6" foam on a piece of plywood. That's why we have a sofa. (And the sofa's not all the great, either!)

We have a 2016 21BD and depending on how many people are in the camper, seating can be tight to say the least. I think if I would have had a different TV, I would have went with the 21SS. The option to have a couch as additional seating would have been nice.

Rockwood Roo 21BD seating options

Thanks! You are all thinking along the same lines as we are. Besides having a couch for extra seating, the 21SS with couch and small dinette will give us more sleeping space if the grandkids are there (for one night only). I'm perfectly comfortable using the dinette as a couch, but hubby prefers an actual couch. Obviously since we like the hybrid we spend more time outdoors than in. It's a tough decision because the 21BD has so much more storage space and a nice kitchen layout, with actual counter space.

Just a suggestion....if having a dinette, sofa, and more storage and counters pace are all important to you, why not look at one of the 23 footers. It's amazing what 2 more feet can do.

Rockwood Roo 21BD seating options

Good question jking46. We've considered, and looked at the hybrids in the 23-24 foot range, and they just don't feel like "ours". Currently we have a 19H Jayco and it's been great. Our main reason for an upgrade is we want to gain floor space with a slide. Our main reason for staying at or below 21' is we prefer to be tucked away in tent sites rather than on cement pads with the big guys.

That's why FR makes so many different hybrids. I'm sure you'll find the one you want. Good luck.

We've had our Roo 23SS for over 10 years now and camp in state and federal campgrounds 95% of the time.
NEVER had any issues.
A 21SS will be 23' tongue to bumper anyway.

Rockwood Roo 21BD seating options

Here in New England, generally the state campgrounds are not spacious. In some, it won't matter. But the one we are thinking about in Maine this summer sets a limit of, I believe, 22 feet. So we couldn't be next to the kids/grands who will be in tents. Even with the 19' Jayco we've missed out on some sites we would have preferred (private campgrounds on Cape Cod, waterfront elsewhere). I know it sounds illogical, but we're not convinced going up to 23' is what we need.

Not illogical at all. Just difficult to check all the boxes in a 21 footer.

Buy the 24ws, you won't regret it, after the first trip you will wonder how you did without it.

If you can, check out the 23IKSS. If I ever sell mine and decide to get another hybrid, that's the one I'm looing at.

We have a 21BD and if we want to watch TV either we will fold down the dinette and recline or one of us will sit at the dinette and the other in a comfy folding chair. There is plenty of floor space in both models to set up additional chairs. The Floorplan on the 21BD works for us since it is just the two of us and 2 big dogs. I doubt that there will be grandchildren in our lifetime, but if there are, the kids love the tents. We love the kitchen setup and especially the front deck for carrying things.

Thanks lablover, that's exactly what I was picturing we'd do. It seems the 21BD has plenty of space to put a folding chair so you don't trip over it in the evening or at night. What kind of chair do you have, and is it really comfy? And I agree - that kitchen layout is what keeps me going back to the 21BD.

Betashut, a few years ago we invested in these folding chairs from camping world that have slide outs from under your seat so you can prop your feet up and recline as well. These were not cheap nor light, however after going through many of the cheap chairs and knowing that we were done being soccer parents and no longer had to schlep them for long distances, we opted for these. Up until we bought our 2015 21BD that had a TV, we spent our time in the evenings watching campfire TV which we mostly prefer except for lousy weather or an occasional DVD. Comfort is a luxury that I am unwilling to give up. We rarely camp where we can get channels since we stay mostly in NP, NF, COE or SP campgrounds. Good luck and enjoy.

Even with a dinette and couch in our 233S, we find the need for more comfortable seating areas with kids and friends. We purchased two bean bag style upright chairs from Walmart called "Big Joe". They are $25, light weight, easy to store and comfortable for a full grown adult to lounge in for the evening.

Looked at lot of different layouts this past summer. Went with the 21ss. It best suited our needs which included a 2 week trip with 5 Grndkids. We downsized from a 30' toy hauler & glad we did. Different point in our lives
