Do I need insurance?

We just purchased a used 23Ikss, and I am wondering do you purchase insurance for it, as we do for our vehicles? Do you HAVE to? We are jumping into this from the pop up world and this just crossed my mind. I want to have everything all set for our first camping trip without any surprises!

I too insure it. It's super cheap. When we bought ours 2 years ago, I called my agent and asked about putting it on our policy. She said, sure, it'll be $60. I'm thinking "a month?".. Nope that was for a year. It soon went up because we had a claim for a new awning so it's now a little over a $100 a year.

With out a doubt. You NEVER know what will happen. It may be someone/thing unexpected or your own carelessness (don't ask how I know that).

To answer your question... No. You are not required to carry insurance, however, it's a real dang good idea. :-)

His question was "do I need", to which the answer is YES, if the question was "is it required by law" the answer would be NO.

I know in Ontario if the RV is attached to the TV then the TV insurance covers it. So it is only when the trailer is not attached that the extra insurance is needed, theft, fire etc. Is this not the case in the USA.

we insure ours as well. X2 what the others have said - it just makes good sense to insure!

Happy Vibe, I thought that was the way in the US also, but we will check with our auto insurer to be sure. Thanks everyone! Better safe than sorry.

when Getting the plates for our TT, i thought I had to show Proof of insurance.

I am required due to having a loan on it, but when that is paid off, I will keep it. It is cheap enough. I am waiting for a bug tree to crash through it. Lol.

I had a roof leak on our old TT and insurance repaired all the damage. Worth every penny.

Also understand the insurance that you are getting. I purchased a new trailer and received insurance thru GIECO (discounts given since I have auto insurance). However, I realized the insurance was not "replacement value" and just had to ask GEICO to upgrade.

Most of the insurance companies I have had experience with in the USA only covered "Towed" vehicles/trailers/RVs for liability under the primary vehicles policy automatically. For any type of damage to your property (IE your travel trailer) you must have additional insurance.

So, while you are pulling your RV if you damage someone elses property or hurt someone, coverage would come from your Primary vehicle policy, but any damage done to your RV would not be covered, or they may have some minimal amount of personal property damage like $5000 which isn't gonna go very far towards repairing a damaged RV.

With the investment most people have in their units and the minimal cost of RV specific insurance, like others have already stated it is a serious gamble to not have it covered.

I have to have insurance because I financed it, even if I didn't finance it and bought it out right, I would have insurance. I have mine insured for purchase price plus personal items. That means I copied the amount from my purchase order and that is the price I get back in a total loss scenario after the first 5 years, if it is a total loss within 5 years my insurance and I agree on a comparable replacement and they buy it for me. Also my personal items are covered up to 5k dollars, this coverage includes comprehensive and collision as well as liability for someone getting hurt in it or at my campsite. I pay 22 dollars for coverage. For me personally, I think this is worth and I have no problem paying for it.

My thoughts:

1) Liability/medical - Check your home owners policy if you are covered already. If not, what do you do if someone slips off your camper's steps and is permanently disabled?

2) Collision - If you back into a tree while you are hooked up to your TV, you are covered PROVIDED (for example) you have collision on your truck's policy AND the policy limit amount is sufficient to cover BOTH vehicles (IF both vehicles are involved). HOWEVER, if you disconnect your camper, and it rolls back into a tree; no coverage. Collision also pays if someone runs into your camper while you are stopped at a light and someone runs into you who does NOT have enough (or no) insurance. Trying to sue the person who has no insurance or assets is an exercise in futility.

3) Comprehensive - Most auto policies require collision to even GET comprehensive. Comprehensive covers fire, theft, water damage, tree falls on camper at campground (and other "acts of god" - like bull elk jumping through your window), wind damage (tornado), or just about anything that does not fit in collision.

4) Towing - Getting your camper towed if your truck beaks down can be a REAL eyeopener. In the case of a 5th wheel, BOTH vehicles are towed together if the camper is the problem. Towing on BOTH allows the fee to be split between the vehicles.

So, I say camper insurance is worth every penny.
