EMS or Surge Protector

Picking up my Roo 233s next Thursday and have been reading many threads over the last couple of months and have a couple of questions regarding electrical protection.

1. Do I want a surge protector or ems? Are they tue same thing?

2. Do I want a portable or hard wired unity?

3. Who is the best manufacturer? Best model for my Roo 233s.

4. What questions am I forgetting to ask?

1) I would not plug in without my Progressive Industries EMS. (You want a EMS, NOT a surge protector)

2) I have owned both and prefer my hardwired unit.

3) Progressive Industries

4) Where are the best / cheapest places to buy?

RV Power Protection EMS

I suggest the Progressive Industries hardwired EMS with the remote display.
Here is my setup.

X2 on the Progressive EMS. EMS-HW30C for 30 amp systems, EMS-HW50C for 50 amp systems.

I agree with the above and actually answer all of your questions one by one in this post:
http://learntorv.com/what-surge-prot...est-for-my-rv/

Specifically, I talk about hard-wire vs portable. Each has pros, each has cons.

And...being that most “upgrade” their RV at some point, many buy the 50 amp first and move it to their next unit.

I fully agree with all of the responses above! We have the portable EMS from Progressive and will not plug in without it. It has stopped several potential problems. We have also used the lifetime warranty and the company is super easy to work with.

I have this model. I didn’t have the money at the time for a hard wired unit plus I didn’t know for sure At the time what I should really buy. It’s not the best but it is better than not having anything at all. We will eventually upgrade once we get settled in on our second season.

I have the Progressive Industries EMS-PT50X and it saved me right here at the campsite we are at now. Lost the neutral and it turned power off.

Another vote for the Progressive Industries EMS units. A surge protector is just that, a surge protector. An EMS unit is so much more and worth every dollar.

At our Florida winter site a neighbor lost his neutral also. He got 2 new televisions, a microwave, water heater and digital clock. No insurance!
That week, my recommendation sold 4 Progressive Industries EMS units.
For several years I used a 30 amp plug-in unit, when we traded up I bought the hard wired 50 amp. I am very happy with that decision. They have saved me multiple times.

Portable vs hardwire

I prefer the portable plug in unit over the hardwire unit for a couple reasons. First of all, I when I upgrade, I can easily take it with me. Secondly, for dry camping, the EMS units are not to be used with an inverter/ generator. Thirdly, ease of installation,I couldn’t really find a heat spot in my rig for a permanent mount, so, I went with the portable unit. Cheap insurance for expensive components.

Why not? I don't have a generator yet, so I am curious to the reason.

Not using an EMS with a generator is news to me. Have done it for years. Just need to run a ground loop plug.

Inerter

The instructions say never use with an inverter. Not exactly sure why, something to do with grounding?
I have a 1500 watt inverters, a Honda 2000 inverter/ generator, a 4000 watt onan buit in generator. I only use my EMS surge protector for shore power at RV parks.

Depending on which inverter-generator, there can be high frequency components of its output that will damage surge protection components.

Ok.... Exactly what is the perceived problem with exactly which invertor generator?

Personally I don't see the need to use one with an inverter generator.
Campground power sure.

Excellent decision to invest in power protection for your new Roo. Definitely get the EMS, rather than the surge protector.

I have the Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C. I removed it from my previous Roo and installed in in my current TT.

My experience has been that I haven't had any surges (the EMS has not reported any) but I've seen lots of low voltage situations, especially in the hotter summer months when everyone at the campground has all their air conditioners working hard. For that reason I also added a Hughes Autoformer to boost voltage.

The only one that I know Progressive Industries says not to use is made by Yamaha. PI gives the model number on their website.

I perfer having a portable over the hardwire. Having a portable allows me to check the plug before I back in and get situated. I do recommend always using an EMS when you hook up to a campground plug. Why would you ever want to risk damage to your RV? If you get a portable, make sure you have a secure way of locking it up so it doesn't disappear while your sleeping.

Spend the money now and get a good one. Or risk needing to spend alot more later replacing everything in your RV later.

Just imagine a long day of driving then pulling into a park only to fry all your electronics.

This is the one I use...Click image for larger version
