Hood Exhaust fan and light not working

Hello,

Wondering if anyone can help diagnose why a hood Exhaust fan and light stops working when the temperature outside is in the 30’s? The next day when the temperature got above 35 degrees both fan and light works..

Thanks for any insight to this conundrum.

What was the temp inside the RV?

What bulb type do you have? (LED, Incandescent)

Is the RV plugged into shore power?

I'll add a few more questions...
Is the fan/light in a slide out?
Are you living in this full time, stationary or have you moved from place to place and still have the issue?

Hello,

To respond to Bama Rambler
1) Temp in the TT was close to outside
2) The bulb is a incandescent
3) Yes, it is plugged into shore power

Responding to 5picker
4) My Shamrock is not a slide out
5) Not living in it FT, bought it in 12/2020 and went out camping once (everything worked fine). Now it’s just sitting in the driveway.

Due to the cold weather here in VA, I’ve checked a couple of times to see if It happens again when the temperature drops at night below 30 degrees and it won’t work and then in the daytime it will work after the temperature goes up.

Sounds like a connection that contracts enough at 30° to not make connection and then expands enough above that temperature to work.

The connection could be anywhere. It could be in the fan/light assembly. It could be at the switch. It could be a wire connection or anywhere really.

It might be hard to pinpoint when working. You may have to brave the cold and start wiggling, testing things when it is not working.

What have you checked so far? Do you have a vom and know how to use it. Most 12v appliances are connected with scotch lock type connectors which just pierce the wire insulation.

Jeff may be onto something with the scotch-lock connector losing connection during cold spells. Check all the connections.

Just for fun I'd replace the incandescent lamp with an LED bulb. It's most likely a 921.

@5picker- Interesting theory, and something worth exploring. Thanks Jeff64 and Bama, will check it out when I get some down time (got other things to work on).

Really appreciate the advice from everyone.

I believe my 2014 model 183 has one of the panel switches ( near the door) tied to the power supplied to the fan and hood.

You know that the fan and hood are both powered by 12VDC...

Try flipping switches on the panel... head high near the door one at a time and power the fan and or light switches one at a time.

I think the temp was just a coincidence with someone flipping a switch...

@rsdata- My 2016 Shamrock does have the panel near the door. One switch does operate the light over the sink, but I don’t think it’s the issue.

But will investigate.

Our 2015 IKSS exhaust fan and light were not working. I traced the problem to a bad solder joint on a circuit board (?) in the hood connected to the fan/light. I re-soldered it and now works fine. (circuit board may have been behind microwave which is above the hood in our trailer)

I will take a stab t the issue. I assume all these lights and fans are similar. I took apart my hood because the light and fan weren't working. I got the meter out and tested all the way down to the just above the light bulb were I found a long thermal wire fuse. There was one regular wire coming into the fuse and one coming out. the fuse for the most part looked like a bent up paper clip with an enlarged center. The way the fuse is connected to the wires is with a barrel cylinder that is crimped.

I can see how if this connection isn't perfectly crimped it would be subject to thermal contraction and expansion explaining the OPs situation. Watch the following video starting at 2:50. Hope this helps
