Hot water bypass

I can't remember for the life of me which one to close. I have three options, or can I get away with closing all of them?

You have to tell us what you want to do?
If you want hot water like normal then you open the one at the top and bottom and close the ovnemrbe that goes between the top ond bottom.

If you want to isolate your hot water tank to drain and/or work on just close the top and bottom one and open the one that goes across the two.
This will allow water to flow but you will not get any hot water.

Now if you want to winterize open all 3 and let it drain at your lowest point.

Hopefull this helps.

Winterizing Should the 2 (top and bottom) be closed before I use antifreeze? I've drained the lines, opened low point and removed the rod.

I leave mine out, but I don't know if that's correct.

Yes the top and bottom should be closed and the middle one open.
This way you can add antifrees and you don't have to fill up the water heater.

You also need to drain the water heater by removing the anode at the bottom of the tank

After winterizing it is best to reinstall the anode with teflon tape, to prevent the threads on the heater from corroding.

Very good point to do this until spring.
