Instead of Mineral Spirits Id use Turpentine............It is actually made from tree sap and is a better solvent for the sap on your roof.

As others have said, take it off with Alcohol ASAP after getting the sap off.

I would look at a bug and tar remover like Turtle wax. Wash very good with
Soap and water. Test first on small area, works on awnings

I have a row of huge white pines towering over part of my driveway.
In hot weather we do NOT park under them as they are constantly dripping sap.

I got some on our daily driver and tried WD40 and mineral spirits. Both were
slowly dissolving the sap after a minute of rubbing with a soaked rag.
Turpentine just worked a lot faster for me.
I had a can from many years ago back in my furniture refinishing days.
It was still stinky and worked like a charm.

If petroleum solvents work for you (WD40, mineral spirits, kerosene) great.
IF you have a lot of sap and you're running out of elbow grease try the turpentine.

Maybe on a rubber roof,,, it is safer to just leave the Pine Tar alone ???

Definitely not on rubber roofing as over 70% of WD-40 is aliphatic hydrocarbon or base oil.

WD-40 is NOT water based, it's designed to DISPLACE water. It will also slowly dissolve rubber products given enough exposure time.

Get a Sap Sucker, ha, ha, actually Goo be Gone does the job. Wash and treat the roof to remove any residual effects of the Goo be Gone or whatever you decide to use.

Seems to me that anything that is strong enough to remove tree sap would damage a rubber roof ??? I have remover Pine Tar from my hands with hand cleaner !!!
Permatex Brand I think ???

Don't mean to hijack the post but I got some pine sap on the tent ends... Different material then the roof but would some of the same remedies work?

Spent a week up in the Adirondaks under a bunch of tall pines and man it was nice... We stayed at an off the beaten path campground between Lake George and Sagandaga and it was nice, remote and quiet. Had some decent small mouth fishing too...

Man I needed that!

You have a lot of good suggestions......while you're deciding on what method you'll use - order a set of PUGs. This is one of the many benefits.

Thanks for the suggestion but I have a pair of custom made awnings that go over the tent ends that were made by the previous owner. I was just too lazy to put them up.....

From a previous thread on this subject:

"On TPO roofing, Alpha Systems suggests using Murphy’s Oil SoapTM with a soft nylon brush or sponge. DO NOT USE SOLID OR GRANULATED CLEANERS on TPO, AS THEY WILL MAR THE NATURAL FINISH. A good thorough cleaning with some elbow grease, along with the oil soap should keep your roof looking good and remove most stains. Again, any non-granulated, non-abrasive cleaner may be used as long as it does not contain petroleum distillates or delaminane (citrus)."

Yes, great to keep the heat in the winter or the AC in the summer.

Why?

Can I ask why remove the pitch if it's on the roof and no one will see? Does it damage the roof?

Butter Worked

Doing my spring clean up today and decided to tackle the pine sap drippings on my tent ends.... The butter worked like a charm!! Let it melt, rub it in, and for heavy gummy wads, just scratch it with your finger nail.

Once again and as mentioned above, the tent ends and the roof are rubber so no WD40 or GOO Gone on them.

Got to love this site!!

I'm with G-force....we have lots of pine trees in our yard and the dog is always stepping in it during "sap" season.. We use Olive Oil.
