Mike.T has it right. I tried putting knives in those slots and they did fit, it just was very inconvenient.

And how many times did you use all burners so you could not get to the knives. Never had an issue. Later RJD

Yep, those knife slots work for some and not for others. Just like everything else. Doesn't make anybody more correct or incorrect.

SarahCat; how did you mount the magnabar? I've been thinking about something like that alongside the stove but wasn't sure where/how to mount it without it falling off...

That is a vent for the OVEN when in use. Next time you use the oven, stick your hand close to it. Will melt anything plastic near it.

Rattling around in there can't do the knife any good although I agree with all the reasons not to store in a drawer or put in sink or dishwasher.
Magnet bar mounted close by but I haven't done that yet.

On ours, the oven has it's own vent as part of the cooktop, in front of the slots we use for knives. It's possible those slots in the piece of wood are for extra ventilation at the top of the dead air space between the back of the stove and the wall. But they work great for large knives, and doesn't get that hot.
But every RV is different.

I use the Magnabar at home and it’s over my prep area, near my kitchen sink. I don’t use a knife block because I don’t want to wasted the counter space and knives loose in drawers are a recipe for a trip to the ER, IMHO.
Hmmmm. Learn something every day. I assumed as most knives are SS and chlorinated products are not friendly to SS then that was the reason. The highest priced knife or cleaver I have was prolly $30... not to worry for me.

We have been using the knife holder for several years now. There is a slight problem with our layout, though. The knife handles interfere with lowering the louvered blind to its bottom position. It takes one hand to operate the string and another tho hold the knife handles forward.

Roo/Shamrock hybrids used to come with a wooden board with knife slots.
It was in the same spot.

Access to our four slots is blocked by the hinged burner cover when it is open (which it always seemed to be when we wanted a knife). I added a magnabar to the wall over the counter to keep our knives handy when camping, but move them to the knife slots when traveling as insurance that they won't fall off the magnabar if/when we hit a pothole.

That definitely is not a knife holder. They are a set of vents to get heat out from the backside of the oven and the area behind the oven.

Now, if you don’t use the oven, then you certainly can use them as knife holders. We did for a while but found that spot to be inaccessible while cooking on the range. We opted for magnetic wall mount holders and have been happy with them.

Perhaps its an air intake for the vent?
Knife holders. They have been there on every RV made. I drilled a hole in one so my sharpening steel would fit.

I use something similar to this , both at home and in my RV. Works great and seldom does a knife come loose. I'm picky about how I store mine too.

In our minilite we can't get at the knives in the holders easily when cooking. Also the knives are in the way of the window handle. Decided not to use them.

I've had 5 RVs and none of them had knife holders. So no, they're aren't on every RV made.

Knife Holder Behind Stove Top

Yes! Those are knife holders and I think they come in very handy. They are also variable sizes which is nice for your different knives. Keeps them away from kids and easily accessible.

In my opinion, which I will back up with evidence, they are knife holders, but not very good ones, due to the access and window blind interference issues, as well as the potential for abrasion with the copper gas line below.
They are not vents for the oven (in my opinion) because the oven has vents built into the cooktop, as shown in the following images from the Suburban installation manual. One of the images appears to include a closed cabinet behind the range, and only a hole cut in it for the gas line to come through, as well as no venting requirements shown in the counter top. My reasoning for the knife holder is that it gives justification for the counter top to be split into sections so they don’t need to make a large counter top with a big part of it cut out for the stove. As is the norm in RV construction, it’s a cost cutting move.
