Knife holder behind range top

My wife discovered this behind the range cover. O thought it was a vent, but the vent is under the cover. She thinks they might be a knife holder? Cant find anything on it. Any ideas? Thanks.

I don't know exactly what it is, but a knife holder doesn't make much sense to me. A knife in a round hole can't be good for the knife.
Perhaps its an air intake for the vent?

You're looking in the wrong spot in the pic. The OP is talking about the slanted slots behind the stove top.

Just be cautious...

We always thought those slots were for knives and for years, I've looked for something from Suburban that said so. We always stuck some knives in there anyway on the various R/V's we have had... until our current model... I happened to glance down in there with a flashlight and the copper line for the LP connection was routed only a couple inches under the end slots.

Could a sharp or pointy tipped knife puncture the soft copper line if it bounces around enough going down the road?... maybe... maybe not but you might want to have a look!

Also, on our current model oven, the hinged, glass cover makes contact with any knife handles that would be in there when it is in the open position.

I removed the slots and put exhaust fans. I Think I can still get knives in there though. Lol

I never looked down through the slots but in 1 or 2 a longer knife hits something, feels more solid then a gas line, shorter knives are fine there.

Temperature extremes are not good for cutlery

I mounted a Magnabar knife ‘rack’ in the galley, but not near the cooktop in our tiny TT. I have training in culinary knife skills and knife maintenance. Temperature extremes are not helpful in maintaining culinary knives. That’s also why although many knives are ‘dishwasher safe’, it’s not a good idea to put them into a dishwasher, either, if you value your knives.

I use the Magnabar at home and it’s over my prep area, near my kitchen sink. I don’t use a knife block because I don’t want to wasted the counter space and knives loose in drawers are a recipe for a trip to the ER, IMHO.

Well, it is supposed to be for knives. My wife bought a cheap set of nylon handle knives for the camper, and they work fine in those slots. Or, at least I thought they did until I read 5picker’s post! Now, I’ve gotta go look! LOL.

Knife holder!!!

Yep. It’s a knife holder.
The one thing to remember is to pull and clean it every so often. Protein buildup happens.
Not good.

We replaced an oven in our houseboat that someone had used to heat with. The cabinets on the left and right were blackened charcoal. We were lucky it didn't burn down the boat.

That said, I believe those slots are to let some of the heat out from behind the range.
