[Poll] Leave Awning in or out while camping?

While at a campsite for a weekend, do your leave your owning extended the entire time or do you only extend it when you are using it?

I have a 23ikss, with the power awning on it. I have read many posts where people have had them damaged by high wind and such... Since I am just starting out, I do not want to get it damaged, but at the camp ground last weekend, even with a major storm coming in on Friday evening, most people just had them out and left out. I am just looking to see if I am being too cautious.

Only out when it is needed. I hae RGB LEDS under the awning at the side of the camper and used TURBS most excellent awning remote control idea. So there is no reason to leave it out and risk a wind storm.

Even WITH (OC Poles) You MUST use Common Sense! As stated by you (Major Storm) leaves little to think about! Youroo!! If our Elect.Awning is out our (POLES) are installed!

Out, unless the winds are getting or supposed to get above around 30mph, depending on shelter from the wind of course. Seldom do we go without the awning. We really like the shelter from dew and rain as we keep a table and kids stuff near the steps

Our seasonal site gets extended May 15th and returned Oct 15th. This is the non motorized version with a RV Rafter in the middle of the tube, center strut leg. Both end arms are lagged into the deck with appropriate mounts.

On our 5er it is out when we need it, in if it gets too windy.

We leave ours out, but we also have a set of O.C.'s awning poles. Camping at shipshewana last year we got caught in a nasty storm. Fortunately we were using the awning poles and didn't have any issues. There were 4 awnings destroyed in the campground that day.
The awning poles for the power awnings rank right up there on the list of mod's IMO.

Youroo is right, common sense should prevail!

We have the Carefree Awning that rolls itself up if the wind comes up. It doesn't take a lot of wind to activate it. OOOOOrrrr, you can turn off the auto switch and it will stay out no matter what. We leave it on auto.

Roll it up in high winds or thunderstorms, otherwise it is out. My insurance covers damage to awning from a storm, minus deductible.

While camping in Storm Lake Iowa, I once witnessed a freak and sudden storm come across the lake that took another campers awning and flipped it over the top of their camper. They spent a long time cleaning that up. That was enough to make my decision. I might extend it a foot or so to provide a little overhang over the entry door but that's the only way I leave it unattended.

I had almost the same thing on my last trailer but I didn't have the center tube/strut. A storm came through and I was literally standing on my deck about to take a step towards the legs to roll the awning up and the wind ripped the legs right out of the mounts and onto our roof.

Our insurance paid for a new awning but we got a little gun-shy about leaving the awning out after that.

Our new trailer faces a different direction and has an electric awning. We haven't been in any major storms with it but it's a matter of 30 seconds to roll it back up if we plan on leaving for any extended period of time during the day.

True story:

We got our 23IKSS last June. Little by little I'd been going through various mods. I was at camp one day and was sitting inside relaxing and reading the huge thread on OldCoot's awning pole hold down kit. I was trying to figure out if it was something I really needed. Well, by coincidence a fast moving thunderstorm came out of nowhere and within about five minutes things went from calm to crazy. The camper was actually shaking in the wind. I quickly retracted the awning and sent OC a private message requesting a kit.

If I hadn't been there to retract it, I'm sure it would have been damaged. Now with the kit, I can leave camp without retracting the awning or worrying about it the whole time. We were on spring break a few weeks ago down on the gulf coast, and I setup the awning when we arrived and left it out the whole week. Thanks OldCoot

We roll ours in if a storm comes up or we are leaving the camp site for any length of time. We have a tarp we put over any thing under the tarp and weigh it down.

Edit: this is with OC's awning poles as well!
