I wouldn't use one of them. They are designed for 220V appliances that require two hots and a ground without a neutral. They are color coded (black, red and green), for that purpose. For your 30 amp service you need 10/2 Romex with one hot (black), one neutral (white), and a copper ground.

Well, as promised, here's the result of my installation.

I spent less than $150 on parts but I had about 45' of 6/3 remaining from another project and a few other parts. Took me about a day to install, but most of that time was spent muscling the 6/3 through the garage.

Red wire was left coiled and terminated at the breaker panel and in the 30A box in case I need to upgrade to 50A at some point. I also installed (2) 20A GFCI outlets; one next to my workbench and one next to the 30A box. They are wired so that if one trips the other does not.

Had an Electrician friend check and test everything before switching on the breakers.
