What else is about to expire?`

Went out to the Roo & my wife told me something was beeping. Figured it was either the smoke detector or the carbon monoxide detector needing a new battery. Found it was the CO detector. Put in a new battery & it continued to beep. Then I notice a little label on the side that says: Replace by Jan 2017. Seems the smoke detector doesn't want a new battery either as it won't test out now. So knowing I have a 2011 Roo & probably due for new tires, what else is about to go on me now?

Why do you think propane tanks only last 5 years? I've got one that's over 12 years old. I've had it re-hydro tested and and the new style valve installed. I'm expecting it to go another 10 yrs.

Where did you have it hydrostatically tested and how much did it cost?

Propane tanks have a life of 12 years before they need to be recertification and then it's every 5 years after that. You will have to talk to a local propane company to have it recertified

I have a 2011 TT and I had to replace the smoke alarm, CO detector and tires. I just replaced it

The propane tanks and batteries were replaced about 2 years ago after being stolen.

Had it tested, recertified and refilled at my local propane dealer. 20lb tank.
$25 if I remember correctly.

And I didn't even mention the fridge that I had to replace last summer that went out just as we getting ready to go on vacation. Fortunately the local RV parts store had several of my model of fridge in stock so was able to get away on time.

Took one of mine that was out of hydro and exchanged it at Lowes. The salesperson let me look through the bottles until I found one that was only 2 years old. My other bottle is up next year and will do the same.

Agreed, unless you have a special tank ( aluminum ETC) or a larger tank that wont actually fit on a roo it's not worth the cost of admission to have it recertified

Getting someone to take/recycle a tank can sometimes be difficult. I felt it was just as easy to have it recertified, since I had to take it to be refilled anyway. Only took the guy 10 min. At about a $1/min, I felt that was a pretty good deal.

You got a deal. LP dealers around here don't want the hassle of a little
bitty 20-30 LB tank.

Local HW store sells new 20# filled ready to go for $34 which isn't too bad.
I just had a grill tank filled and the guy said it's gonna expire in a few weeks....

LP is cheap right now tho-- just had a 30# filled for $21 which was a
good price for my neighborhood.
When my twin 30# tanks expire I'll have to check if I can even find
a LP filling dealer that will re-certify them.

How are you disposing of the old ones?

I haven't had to dispose of any yet.... if it's a 20 that's out dated I may
trade it in for a newer one at an exchange station at WalMart or Home Depot.

I may see if the local HW store that sells new filled tanks will take it.

If it's my 30s I'll probably try to get them re-certified if that's not too expensive.

Talk to local metal artist they use them to create great things with old tanks. I personally pop the valves off and cut them up for various things. I made kettles out of a few for my old job doing soil borings to keep the wash water warm in the winter

I'd guess most of us are not set up to cut one of these things into pieces.

I'll respectfuly disagree with your fridge life at 6 years. The life of any ammonia fridge entirely depends on how you take care of it. Levelling it properly in 2 planes and insuring the heat transfer from the condenser is adequate will really make them last a long time. My last RV was 15 years old and the fridge was working as good as it did when new. I know of owners with ammonia fridges over 20 tears old that work as good as new.

It's all about proper set up and maintenance.

Same with propane bottles. My last RV's bottles were as good as new at 15 years.

The new RV is entirely LED all over so lights will last basically forever.

Interesting. I've never got a propane bottle certified. Welding bottles, every 10 years but propane....never.
