For a tow vehicle, I would say neither. They don't have max tow nor brake controllers and I will estimate both have low payload capacities. I know you may be towing a light trailer for now, but neither of these trucks allow you to upgrade to a heavier trailer down the road.

I would go with the new FX4. This would give you the new truck warranty in case there were any problems. The FX4 has just about as many options as the Lariat. Either one would be a nice truck.

Go with the lariat if it's a certified vehicle . Gives you much more warranty then the brand new vehicle warranty .

Get something with rear camera , tow package with brake controller.

I'm not real sure about that v6 ecoboost when in tow mode. I hear tows ok but mpg suffers. I opted for a v8 and went with RAM since their 8 SPd tranny is getting me 18 to 19 mpg around town. Someone on the forums got a new diesel RAM and reported 27 mpg and 15 (to my 11) in tow mode. But like the ford it is a small 6 with turbo. I do like the Fords though and they are plenty popular.

Lariats are nice but all that bling reduces payload capacity which is crucial when towing.

for not much more, a local dodge dealer had a 1/2 ton diesel 4x4 crew cab for 41000 recently. it wasnt a loaded to the gills truck, but it had decent equipment. yeah, they are very new and the jury still seems out, but you will love the diesel power. and since it is a small diesel, you would not need the 2.5 gallons of oil at oil change, and the service costs would probably be in line with or a little more than with gas motor. and if its knocking down 27 hiway empty, compared to 21 for gas, you should break even fairly quickly. consider all options before plunking down a wad of cash.

I don't see where the new one has trailer tow package, just a hitch, and neither have the max tow package. Most of that stuff listed just lowers your payload.

This RAM 1500 option uses the Fiat 3.0 TurboDiesel & tows around 9,000 lbs. IMO that's a perfect match for someone who uses the TV as their daily driver & tows a hybrid or other TT with a low tongue weight. IMO the better mileage will help offset the higher cost of a new truck (& diesel).

Ecoboost blows the doors off many a 3/4 ton for torque and HP. I towed with a 5.4 V8 and replaced it with V6 Ecoboost. I use the truck as a daily driver and it gets 14 litres per 100 km vs 18 litres per 100 km for the 5.4 V8.
Just came back from from a 3500 tow to Goshen and back. No issues at all keeping up or using dynamic braking to slow it down.

That's a lot of money for a V-6 gasser. May owe it to yourself to drive a 3/4 ton diesel. If you are flexible on the options, it may be something to consider...

Ecoboost with 3.55 or 3.73. Definitly the best choice out there. Good power band for towing. I would look for a tow package for the upgraded radiator and tranny cooler, but it isn't needed when not pushing the limits. Diesel or 2500+ trucks aren't worth it for under #8000 trailers. Newer 1500's are perfectly suited to tow that and be drivable around town. Plus why would you pay .50 cents + a gallon more for diesel.

I have 3.73 and towed my 9500 lb Rockwood at 62 mph or 100 kph just fine. Can go faster but that is unsafe for tires on the trailer. I did upgrade to LT tires and have no airbags/timbrens and only 1/2 inch lower than the front. With the lift kit installed last week on the Rockwood it is towing level.

You DEFINITELY need the 3.73 axel.
I visited the weight police at Goshen and plopped down my $60 for a detailed analysis. Good News: Our EcoBeast is "Just" Enough to yank what we own - well we are 350 lbs over but a weight adjustment will take care of that.

Bad News: If we want to upgrade, we will have to upgrade the TV as well.

Sooooo Based on this, suggest you consider a 250 or 350 series if you plan on upgrading anything in the near future

Neither one. Start looking for a v8 or better yet a F250 with a 6.2.
You didn't say what you were planning to tow with your new truck.

Looks like he has a 2012 Rockwood roo 23ss. Eco boost is plenty of truck for it, I have a friend towing an 11000 lb 5er with one here on the east coast and doing fine in the blue ridge mountains with it. That said, I would not get an eco boost without the max tow/hd package. If you are upgrading to something bigger anytime soon, for that money you can get a decent 3/4 or 1 ton truck. When I was shopping this spring I found new 2013 ram 3500 diesel for $36k (base 4x4 model), New 2014 Chevy 3500 diesel (LT/midlevel trim 4x4) for low 40's (lower if your dealership screws up pricing like mine did). The deals are there if your not too picky. I had to give on color and heated seats but got everything else on my wish list. keep in mind that the above mentioned diesels are way more truck than you need for the roo but give you an option for a trailer upgrade.

I would suggest you tow with a V6 Ecoboost. I have first hand experience on the same route, same trailer towing with a V8 and Ecoboost. Ecoboost beats the 5.4 Triton hands done. the V8 was screaming on the hills, the Ecoboost just grunts and digs in and climbs.

Strange!

The VIN listed as an FX4 does have the 535 towing package, super cooling radiator and the integrated brake controller. However, that VIN also appears to be an XLT not an FX4. Dealer playing tricks maybe? So, this is either the wrong VIN or not an FX4 to start with.

Cannot accurately compare the Lariat without the VIN or full list of options.
